I'm looking for a network monitor to trace a suspected network problem on my computer. A bit of context: I'm running IIS 5.1 on XP Pro, and downloads of dll's are randomly being delayed (by 7 minutes consistently). So this causes timeouts on the client side. The IIS logs don't show anything out of the ordinary, except that files are sometimes served with 7 minute delays! I don't think it's an IIS problem, I'm suspecting it's some networking issue, but I'm a networking noob, so I don't know where to start looking! (I already excluded the ZoneAlarm firewall, since I tried the same with it turned off). Any help is appreciated!

Ethereal[^].  Helped me detect that my hardware router had a faulty port and was causing bursts of fragmented packets that was seriously affecting my UL/DL rate.    Easy to set up, run, and understand.  Highly recommended.    Peace!

Not exactly... From the Ethereal-users list:

That's not completely true, ethereal is still ethereal, but ethereal
development has ceased. All the core developers are currently working
on wireshark. So do not expect new releases of ethereal any time soon,
            Wireshark is what's being developed.

Which is why there is no mention of Wireshark on the Ethereal site. :)   But you are correct in recommending Wireshark as development has stopped on Ethereal and Wireshark is to be the successor to Ethereal.    Peace!

And here I was thinking you wanted a monitor (as in, LCD or CRT) that could attach itself to a network and view other people's monitor's. Marc

Better patent that quickly Marc before Mr Jobs catches up on the Lounge posts or you'll be kicking yourself every time you see an iMonitor for the rest of forever.

Nothing is exactly what it seems but everything with seems can be unpicked.

You may want to give Microsoft Network Monitor 3.1 [^] a look. I've used ethereal in the past, but this is a little easier to set up in my opinion, and the new version has a lot of the same features ethereal has, but a little easier to setup and use than in ethereal.

Thanks... Ironically the download hangs at the last bit... must not be my day (or week if not careful).
