Rather than posting a link to one a news article I'll just link to a picture gallery[^]. I believe we have some CPians in that area and/or friends and family. We should keep the victims and families in our thoughts and prayers.

This is horrible but I am so thankful it happened during very hot weather and not in the winter time where hypothermia kills in 15 minutes. In a place like Minn. that would have doubled the magnitude of the tragedy. It's a real downer to see stuff like this. I know they were working on it to repair the whole bridge. Does anyone know how this happened? Was it just weather? Did someone screw up?

They don't know yet, the work they were doing wasn't structural and it sounds like they were nearly finished.

I have only skimmed the newspaper reports at this point, but I believe the bridge was inspected for safety in 2005 and no problem was found. I commute every day on the road (I35W) that includes the bridge, but I don't cross the bridge. On my way home last night, the electronic sign above the freeway said that the road was closed at the river, take alternate routes. It didn't hint at why, but to close a road that carries that much traffic, it must be a major crash I thought. The entire front page of this morning's newspaper in St. Paul was devoted to the story. The headline read, "I heard it crack!" Biggest type I've seen since America landed a man on the moon. It said that at least seven people were killed and scores injured. The bridge was filled with stop-and-go traffic at the time. Rerouting the traffic will be nightmarish, but not so bad compared to what the people on the bridge endured. My thoughts and prayers are with them and their families. BDF

From what I have heard there were things that were being monitored, but there it was expected to not need structural repair/replacement till after 2020.

Yeah, this was posted and discussed in the lounge[^] as it was happening last night. I live in Minnesota, about 20 miles or so from the collapse. I was on that highway when it happened, maybe 15 miles south of it. My brother Jesse passed over the bridge coming home from work about an hour before it collapsed. I blogged about all this, see my sig.

The bridge was reviewed by MNDOT in 2005 and given a 4 out of 10. A 4 means there is "advanced section loss, deterioration, spalling or scour." Spalling is a term used to describe cracking, chipping, crumbling or fraying, while scour is a term used for erosion caused by flowing water. However, that is still in the guidelines of being usable. I think it's going to come out that money that was supposed to fix the bridge went into the new dome fund (which groundbreaking was supposed to be today). All my family is safe and other CPians have checked in and said they were okay. -- modified at 11:29 Thursday 2nd August, 2007 Just listening to the live conference (10:30am central). There are more deceased that have not been removed from the scene. Most of these were pinned, including one man who was dying and gave his last statements to an officer to pass to his family. Several cars under the water have not been searched yet.

That's certainly possible. Last summer a highway bridge near my parents house went from need repair in 10ish years, to so bad it could only be used for passenger vehicles until repaired. Traffic where they live is light enough that it didn't produce anything approaching the sort of snarl this is going to, but for several months there was a 20ish minute detour in place.

Yes, but... Some notes from an article in the Minneapolis newspaper regarding that inspection: The superstructure was rated 4 the deck was rated 5 the substructure was rated 6 This is on a scale from 0 (failed) to 9 (excellent.) From (an even more) complex formula, the bridge got an overall rating of 50 per cent. In this system, 80% or less means some rehab may be needed, 50% or less means replacement may be in order. "Many other bridges nationwide carry the same designation." Charming. :omg: Glad to hear that your family is safe, as well as Judah and his brother. BDF

Wow, close call. I found out a former coworker was headed somewhere and instead of taking his normal route he decided to go a different way... had he not he probably would have been on the bridge at the time it collapsed.

I'd agree if the bridge wasn't already 40 years old, from what I have seen (and you may have seen something that I haven't) it looks like a failure of either design or materials. Compounded with possibly over optimistic reviews of the bridge's condition.
