Last couple of months this bad habit for me has gotton to the point when its just out of control. If you quit how did you do it? Is it even possible to do when you are constantly around others that smoke? (no way to avoid it) Mark A

I quit ~6 weeks ago - just stopped dead - and my wife and all my friends smoke. The first day is the hardest - once you've gone a full day, it gets easier. I did chew gum which really helped - especially when you REALLY crave for a cig - after eating, in the pub, etc.

Faith. Believing in something you *know* isn't true.

No, I have not tried any of that stuff. I wanted to see what other people approach was and whether it worked or not first before looking into anything like that. Mark A

Cold f**king turkey, man. I quit on January 1, 1991. I realized early on that if I ever smoked another cigarette, it would be quit / start / quit / start for the rest of my life. I was able to do it, even though my wife continues to smoke to this day. Good luck, and keep us up to date on how you're doing. Gary R. Wheeler

Congrats on being smoke free. =) Hopefully you still dont get cravings. Its really to bad she did not quit with you. Then you both would be smoke free. Rather then 'try' to do it, I am just going 'to' do it. If that makes any sense. Anyway, It will be nice to be able to go to sleep at night and be able to sleep the whole night through. Not waking up at some ungodly hour to smoke a butt so I can go back to sleep. Mark A

Yeah, she quit while she was pregnant but then started again almost immediately. No more cravings, but that's probably due to the fact I'm a runner/cyclist now, and that's how I handle stress instead of smoking. My doctor tells me I substituted one addiction for another :wtf:. Mark I am a sort of expert ar quitting smoking. Done that effectively many times. I restarted but every time I stopped I managed to stay away for at least 4 weeks. That's pretty cool ;-) Nish

I quit 9 years ago using "the patch" after smoking for many years. I used to wake up during the night needing a cigarette; that's how you can tell you're really addicted. I did the patch for 6 weeks in 3 decreasing steps of 2 weeks each and then stopped altogether. I still smoked some cigarettes during the first few weeks even though you're not supposed to. It is very tough to quit when you're around others that smoke. Keep lots of hard candies and chewing gum in your pockets, ready for use! Also, you may want to have a drinking straw or pencil available to keep your hands busy or to chew on. Try to give yourself some rewards. For example, if you can buy a new car, make it a permanently smoke-free car. Get a new shirt or two that don't reek of smoke. Use a portable air-filter in your bedroom to clear the air. Take a time-out into a park or somewhere that you can have fresh air. Also, you may want to increase your weekly exercise because food tastes so much better after you stop smoking that you can gain weight and eating also serves as a substitute for smoking. Good luck! I know you can do it.

I was too stuck up and square to even start smoking. After a poor performance in London in 1899, Steinitz went insane and died a year later on August 12, 1900 at Wards Island, N.Y.
