Very arrogant South Africa almost gets it.....

That was a very arrogant performance(maybe not performance but display) from a Bok side today. The second stringers were sent in to do a decent job against a non rated rugby side like Tonga and they dissapointent such that White had to trough almost half the team of the field and replace them with players who want to play.:~ The second stringers should hang there heads in shame :omg:for not playing rugby and expecting that any team will just had them the points because they are the wearing the mighty Springboks jersey!! Lucky to have won and thanks to Tonga for giving them a right kick up the backside Almost through the TV out the window:mad:

Sadly I did not seen the game, all games are not on free TV channels in France (what a shame :mad: ) With the Tonga team plays Finau Maka, a player from my home team (Stade Toulousain[^]), I player I greatly respect (with his brother, Isitolo, who made so many great things for the team too, and who now ends his career in Japan). Before the RWC, I expected Tonga to be below Samoa, but now it's clear Tonga has a good team, with an interesting play. I wonder if they will be able to surprise England. An interesting match to come!

There are clearly two different English teams, the one with and the one without Wilkinson. If Tonga is able to set and execute an 'anti-wilkinson' plan, it could create a big surprise. For France, let see first if Ireland is able to win vs Argentina or not (I would be very surprised if they do, the Pumas seem to play much better - they could go far in this competition). If we face NZ in quarter-final, we will clearly be underdogs vs the best team of the World. That's why we could win :-D

Francois, we sent on four of our first team to help out. Out of 15 players that doesn't make 50%. Tonga did well, we always knew they would be tough which is why we had a strong bench. And you can't field the same side in every game. You wear out your best players and then when you meet the All Blacks you get screwed. I assume you are French. The only reason you have had to field your best team in every game is because you lost that first game. If you had beaten Argentina you wouldn't have fielded such a strong side against the likes of Namibia. You would have been "arrogant" and sent in your second team. Would you have preferred the Boks to have stuck with an under-performing side and lost the game? We have the resources, we ended up needing them and we used them. What is arrogant about that?

It was a thrilling game. Tonga took advantage of our second-team and forced us to bring on 4 first-team players from the bench early on. We built a healthy lead then but we lost two players, including Habana on the wing, to yellow cards and the Tongans took clever advantage of that by kicking down the weakened wing. We gave away some poor penalties and didn't capitalise on the penalties Tonga gave us (Pretorius missed 12 easy points.) Samoa were mightier in the hits but Tonga are a smarter side. They have plenty of physicality but they have better discipline and strategic kicking than Samoa. They really pushed our full-back and fly-half. They also didn't start to flag in the second-half like the Samoans did. I was very tense in the closing 15 minutes. They needed just a converted try to win and their probing attacks were bringing them awfully close. It shows the Boks have a good first team but unlike the All Blacks we don't have two first teams. And if Wilkinson gets clamped down or injured then Tonga should beat England and come out of the pool stage.

Also if I remember right France didn't field its best team against Argentina and belatedly brought on its best players in the last part of the second half when it realised it was about to loose. If those three (Cheval, Michalak and the third whose name I cannot remember) had been brought in earlier it might have been a different story. I didn't see that as arrogance, just incompetence.

The biggest problem of Samoa was they were unable to keep the ball on lineouts and scrums against the English forwards, who made a very good game (it seems Fidji has the same problem right now vs Australia). Without these 'starting phases', no team is able to win. Also, Samoa is maybe very physical, but sometimes it borders brutality. A yellow card for high tackle would have been deserved at least once.

My reason for saying that the Boks second stringers were arrogant was that they assumed because Jake White send them in to take "care of" Tonga that they would have an easy time of it. They were probably right in thinking that Tonga would be a walk over, on any other day perhaps, but in a World Cup anything can happen i.e France v Argentina (previous World Cups have there own uspets to look at). They (the second team) are a very good set of players and can probably beat any of the teams in the competition as it stands now: they, and for that matter anny team there, must just have the will and tenacity to go and do it. The second team lacked that for about 40-50 mintues and then Jake had to bring in the cavalry (I know its not 50%) to give them a bit of spark and force them to get stuck in..it ledd to three brilliant tries almost at will!! Today matchup of Sctoland against New Zealand (a clash of simmilar colooured jerseys by the way...what was that) showed that the All Blacks can be beaten: by fighting fire with fire. The Scots were in their faces the whoel of the second half and although they did not score a single point thet kep the Blacks from scorring for a frustratingly long time...and it showed as they made some basic errors in trying to force the game in certain areas. I think that France will give the All Blacks a go in the 1/4 and that South AFrica will meet them again the Finals for a 1995 repeat showdown (how is that for a prediction);P Bokke - ons sal hulle wys
