Does your wife/gf volunteer your services?

My wife always volunteers me to fix other people's computer problems. It doesn't matter to her if I have experience with what is wrong or not. Is this a common occurrence with anyone else? -Jack To an optimist the glass is half full. To a pessimist the glass is half empty. To a programmer the glass is twice as big as it needs to be.

It happened to me twice that different persons asked me to assist them in reinstalling the operating system. It was a pain. When I went there I discovered that there CD-ROM didn't seem to work or there was something wrong with the graphics card and the computer wouldn't bootup, or after managing to install the OS I found that they had no driver for any of the hardware devives and had no idea what kind of device those were so I could look up a driver on the internet..... My family and friend discovered some years ago that I can fix computers too. No more weekends for me! And for them, it means that they can download and install every f***ing stupid shareware until they crash that toy OS (W95). They buy the most cheap hardware and upgrade very often, because they have a free "lifetime warranty" with me! And if I say "no", you know what is the reaction... Well, how I got away of this ? No one likes to be without computer, e-mail, for a long time so: "Oh, you f***ed your computer configuration ??? Sure, I'll fix it, reinstall OS and upgrade your computer for free!! I'm a little short of time, so can you leave your computer here in my home and in 2 or 3 weeks I'll have it fixed. It's more convenient too, I have lots of tools and can donwload drivers here. Oh, you need it to tomorrow? Oh, well, next time, then. Bye!!" Crivo Automated Credit Assessment

As long as they provide some beer (or similar) and some good conversation I don't mind. What comes around goes around as they say (or "what you gain on the roundabout you lose on the swing"...) If it's people I don't know and they just want me to come in and fix the problem then to me that's a contract and I'll charge - which once again I don't mind, and I can but think that they shouldn't mind. I mean if I knew of a friend-of-a-friend who was a good mechanic, I would put my car in with them (as pay them the appropriate rates) because I trust through the friend that they are better than just some smuch I usually end up with taking my car too... My Mum has a habit of volenteering my services to friends / family / neighbours, but I tend not to mind (as they usually provide food / drink / money for my time) -- Help me! I'm turning into a grapefruit!

My family do that constantly... have no wife or gf [boo hoo] to do it for me
