OK, I had to share this. Every Wednesday, there is a guy who comes to the office building I work at and washes people's cars for $20 or so. The guy that I share the office with decided he wanted his car washed, and gave the carwasher the key to his car so he can move it to a more deserted area of the parking lot and wash it. Well, it turns out that the guy who washes the cars was able to use the key my coworker gave him to (unknowingly) unlock, move and wash the wrong car! I'd love to see the look on the owner's face when he realizes his car has been moved, washed, and parked in a different spot w/o him knowing about it...

:wtf: For real? :omg: I thought keys could only unlock one car? And that if its a remote key, that they each have unique ID's for each car and its keys.

Wrong. The key teeth patterns DO repeat. I think, now-a-days, GM's repeats after about 1.4 million keys. It used to be much lower.

Older cars will have worn locks and so will the key be worn. This combination means that more cars can be opened with a key.

Naaa keys get worn and loose and other "similar" keys work. Ask your dad!

Back in the day it was pretty much guranteed that if there were 5 of the same model in a parking lot two could be unlocked with the same key. I'm sure they're much more careful about that now but it just wasn't an issue then.

My wifes Senic doesn't have a key it has a card its all very weird.

It was an actual key, not a remote. And I took a look at it, the grooves of the key were VERY worn down.
Hmm... maybe i should start wearing down this set of car keys... see where it gets me :laugh:

Actually, wouldn't that be: Event 1: Call police, report car stolen. Event 2: Police come, you give them the description and plate number Event 3: Police report back that your car is in the parking lot Event 4: You try to convince the police that your car was stolen and washed then brought back Event 5: Police ban you from calling 911 again :)

Was it an old car? I had a 1980 model that I lost the key for and found I could open and start it with a pair of nail sissors

My mother had a VW Jetta once (pre-Bora limousine, not the car that is known as "VW Golf" everywhere but the US). One day, she forgot black handbag in it. We were at some relatives birthday party, and she told me to get it, because she did not want it to be stolen. I went there, opened the door, got the handbag, returned it to her and we stayed. Later that night, she opened her handbag - and realized it wasn't hers. She thought that maybe it was switched, because we were moving around in the stable (where the party took place) a lot. So she asked the band for a mike and told people to please look if they had the wrong handbag (we hadn't found a name yet), and one woman said that she was missing hers, but was sure she had taken it along. She identified the handbag, we gave it to her, and my mother continued looking for hers the whole night. When we were about to leave, she gave up, and was very annoyed - until we came to the car, where the handbag was sitting on the passenger seat. Keys were identical (same cutting ID and all) Since then, I've found out that you can open any older VW car with [censored precondition] by using a [censored tool] that has a [censored modification] in it.
