Enterprise systems diagram... best tool ?
-
Hi ! My boss delegate me a undesirable task as christmas gift ! I have to create a diagram to map all the systems that run inside our company...the hell map. It would be great if we could represent systems inside boxes and also the servers and databases it uses. Drill-down to view details would be great too :) Do you have any suggestion on tools for that ? Excel is the simplest one, Visio diagrams could be used too, but I think that a best fit tool for that exist. Thanks for any suggestion.

are you attempting a cross-reference list of people to servers? or just a heirarchal association list of the company its assets? I used freemind last time. map major systems, break down to subsystems, break down to sub-sub-systems or server software, etc.

No, we don't intend to map people, the idea is more software-infrastructure related. I'm using freemind for another diagrams, but the ideia here is not to organize into hierarchal views, but something like a deployment diagram for the whole company. Thanks.

If the project involves a lot of "walking around and asking" discovery, and you have a Windows PDA, I can recommend First Diagramming at www.matterandmotion.com. Yes, this is a shameless plug. And, in the spirit of full disclosure I can also recommend PocketDraw (www.pocketdraw.com). Either is better than lugging a laptop around and waiting for it to boot... Have fun!

Might as well. Visio is probably the better bet.

This one is well worth the money and will do everything. http://www.smartdraw.com/[^] This is what my old company used.
That one is good. I've only used Version 6 and the newer ones seem to be overkill for my purposes.

Whatever you get, make sure it's a CASE tool; that will save you hours and hours of work. Visio-type diagram tools are great for drawing pictures, but you can't build solid relationships between diagrams or objects on different diagrams. I still use an old version of Select Enterprise(ze?), which almost fits on a floppy disc, but manages to do things like consistency checking and automatic population of sub-diagrams (which non-CASE tools can't do). It might be worth looking to see what the new version is like.
