    I'd like to thank Microsoft for my wonderful gift this morning.... As happens every other month or so, the major pack of security updates installed itself when I booted this morning.  Fine.  Needs to reboot....cool - I need to drink more coffee anyway. Updates finish installing - I finally get to log on - my multi-monitor display settings are all reversed, one monitor is disabled (but not the primary/#1)...WTF.  And I have a spankin new internet explorer icon in my quick launch bar (erm...I already had one there). Thanks Microsoft! I love you too. Mark

      It may seem small, but that's one of the things that just pisses me off to no end. I have exactly three icons down in that quick launch bar. I don't want any more than that. IE is not one of them. (I use Firefox. And it appears you do too. ;P) And for that to show up after what seems like every update just irritates me beyond belief.

        Yeah - I don't get too worked up about it anymore, but really - I'd like to be asked first if I want even an icon installed somewhere :) Cheers, Mark

            How about an explorer icon with a heart? :rolleyes:

              You have to understand, I primarily use Gentoo[^] as my OS now. So to go from an OS that's all about choice and then boot into Vista, where everything is chosen for me, and I don't have any recourse but to delete icons again just touches on the same raw nerve over and over again. ;P

                My personal favorite: Every stinkin' Windows Update resets my 'preferred' e-mail client to Outlook. And I don't even have Outlook installed.

                Software Zen: delete this;

                  Mark, I had the same thing happen last Saturday morning. My display settings were completely hosed and everytime I tried to set to a resolution larger than 800x600, it would succeed, but I had to mouse around to each edge in order to see anything to the right or left or top or bottom. It took me awhile to find that setting to turn off. :)

                    Ouch!  Thankfully, I only had to monkey around with the display settings - enable the "second" monitor (which was the primary LOL) and swap the monitors (in the settings)...why the hell it moved monitor 2 to the left side and disabled it....i dunno :)

                      Microsoft's in love with me too! My Vista test partition decided to install 6 updates at shutdown: it never started again. It just hangs on a black screen when it initializes the drivers (in Safe Mode the last line printed is "Loading crcdisk.sys", it does not generate the ntbtlog file to get a hint about what fails, and the automatic repair from the dvd fails). Since I won't need it for a while though, I'll reinstall it once SP1 comes out, to revive some interest...

                          MY XP (dell) laptop has randomly fubared with the dual monitor config on un/redock for over 2 years now.

                          Otherwise [Microsoft is] toast in the long term no matter how much money they've got. They would be already if the Linux community didn't have it's head so firmly up it's own command line buffer that it looks like taking 15 years to find the desktop. -- Matthew Faithfull
