What on Earth are they doing landing on a runway that's perpendicular to the wind??? I thought they were always meant to land into the wind (or at least as much as possible into the wind) (Even so, that's some seriesly good work in keeping things together)

Haven't watched the video yet, but where I fly from we have 1 runway so sometimes we have no option but to land at right angles to the wind direction.
I hope you have an insurance. ;P

Yes, and the experience/ability to land in a crosswind. Having viewed the video, the aircraft did a textbook crosswind approach. Crabbing along the approach and at the last minute turning the nose to point down the runway and dipping the windward side wing. This is totally normal, except in the very last seconds the wind appears to gust forcing a go-around. It was perhaps a bit more hairy than most crosswind landings, but this sort of thing happens many hundreds of times a day around the world without being filmed and turned into today's no news news[^]. edit: sky news reports that a wing scaped the runway, which is DEFINATELY more hairy than the many hundreds of crosswind landings mentioned above!

Scary. I am glad such winds are not common in India.

I had a similar thing coming into Brussels a few weeks back. The pilot had just got all the rear wheels on the ground when a gust picked the right hand wing up and we went back to one wheel. He didnt scrape the wing though and we landed OK.

No, the pilot is an idiot for endangering the lives of his passengers. Marc

No, they do. However, most of the wind is contained between the ears of some of the developers there.

Strong winds, as shown in the video are rare here.
