Probable tornado hits downtown Atlanta
-
Wow[^] The (probable) tornado affected a swath of Atlanta that includes or is right near the majority of Atlanta's few tourist spots (CNN center, Georgia Dome, Georgia Aquarium, Centennial Olympic Park). If the Tornado had hit 15 minutes later, or if Alabama hadn't hit a 3-pointer against Mississippi State to force an overtime in their game at the Georgia Dome, the streets would have been filled with thousands of people leaving the game when it hit. Same for the Hawks - Clippers game going on down the street. As it stands now, there are a small number of partially collapsed buildings (mostly smaller condo/apartments), moderate to severe building damage on a few buildings, no fatalities, and a surprisingly small amount of injuries. Lots of glass on the ground, billboards collapsed, debris everywhere - but luckily it looks like inanimate objects took the brunt of the damage. I hope that turns out to still be the case when the sun comes up. I work a few blocks from where this hit, and live less than two miles from it. I'm glad I didn't decide to pull a late-night tonight at the office. I hope the contents of my office aren't strewn about the street now.
