http://www.jvf.co.ukIt's a series of adventures of three companians travelling in a plane that slices through multiple dimensions. You need three people to anchor the plane (in the same way that you need two points to define a line). At the end of each novel, one of the characters departs and the plane rotates until a new character is caught. He has had interesting places (eg Fractal Mode where the world is constructed of fractals), worlds with intelligent Horses and even a world where it's still the Cambrian period of Earth's development. I've noticed a lot of Terry Pratchett quotes / mentions recently and i've been wondering which other authors people like in the sci-fi/fantasy genre. Ian M. Banks is a particulary good author as is Julian May, who else?
For sci-fi: Douglas Adams (one of my favorite authors with Stefano Benni and Daniel Pennac). Also William Gibson and Philip K. Dick ("Do androids dream of electric sheep?" is even better than the movie IMHO). I like also Douglas Coupland (not sci-fi but many of his novels are related to technology) I don't like much fantasy. I agree on the ending of "The Nights Dawn" though it didn't scare me away. As Roger suggests, try the Greg Mandell books, they are quite good. I can also recommend "Fallen Dragon", but be prepared to go through some hundred rather boring start pages. I actually did put the book away for months, but then I got sick and didn't have any other reading and it appeared that the action started just a few pages from where I initially stopped!.
