Simple router recomendation.

I am searching for a good router that can handle heavy duty traffic and won't empty my bank account. I want to setup a wireless network, I have the access point unit, I just need a router to plug it in to. I want something that is solid and can handle a full 100mbps capacity. Looking around at the reviews and price of several units I have realized that this wont be a simple decision. I'm not a network guru at all so your advice will be helpful.

Personally I have a Linksys WRT54G v2(Current model is v8), and two WRT54GLs. They are fantastic little boxes, the standard firmware sucks, but once you replace it with DD-Wrt you can't beat them for a G router. You can get the WRT54GL from Newegg for $60. EDIT: If you care about speed, I strongly suggest you get a gigibit network device, not just a 10/100 device.

Does this really help? Can the little MIPS and ARM processors in the routers really handle GBit-Ethernet? I doubt it, and have yet to see a router-box to saturate a 100MBit wire!

How much money is in your bank account? My recommendation for a router/firewall is Zyxel. You're only going to realize about 80-85mbs out of any 100mb system, and that's if ALL of the devices on the network are configured properly.

And yes, if you buy a Gigibit network device it will give you better performance. Scott Hanselman has a good series of posts about hoem networking. You have to read the reviews on this front. Some junky ones top out just over 100, higher quality ones do much better.

OK - my DSL uplink could not saturate 10 MBit, and Filetransfer within my home net is not too heavy. For Video, 100 MBit is enough for several DVB-T streams[^] I simply see no sense in paying the heavy price-difference to get GBit stuff.
