SQL Server reporting services or Crystal Reports?

I dunno if the lounge is the right place for this question but here goes. Has anybody here used both of the above reporting services? If so, which one would you recommend? From what I have read Crystal Reports seems better but I would like to hear what people think. Thanks

This was asked just a few days back, and the answer was DevExpress XtraReports.

Thanks but it's gonna be a bit difficult to convince people to go with a reporting service that they have never heard of. Have you perhaps used the two that I mentioned above? Thanks
I've used all 3. Use Crystal Reports only if you enjoy shooting yourself in the foot and think that scream therapy is the best way to code. SSRS is awesome but it can be heavy especially if you don't have the back end to support it; failing that XtraReports from Devexpress (which is VERY well known and is an industry standard more or less) is a fantastic alternative. Recently, we've been directed to http://freereporting.com/[^]. This is one that seems promising but I haven't tried it myself and neither do I know of someone who has tried it. If you're still at an early stage you might want to give it a try. And if you do, do post back :)

Thanks for the response, I might give XtraReports and FreeReporting a try. I have heard that the newest version of Crystal Reports is a lot better than older versions, have you used it? It looks like I will be sticking with my original choice, SSRS. Thanks

A lot better is a relative term in comparison with how terrible it was. Its like the "who's taller than Mickey Rooney contest". SSRS is a really good choice but do look into XtraReports, they have a trial that you can download. It also comes with a designer that the user can use to create their own reports.

OK, I will give it a try tomorrow, I like the fact that SSRS is free though. Just another question, have you tried running SSRS on the same server as your SQL Server? I have read a few articles that recommend having them on 2 different servers in which case I will need another SQL licence in which case it would probably work out more expensive. Our database servers aren't really under much load though. Thanks again

I've read similar articles and honestly, I've never had to install SSRS on another box. People seriously underestimate the power of a DB. Regarding XtraReports, its just another option really, but one that I have tried and its quite good.
