According to BBC News[^], there is a proposed 'Shake-up' for the Internet which includes allowing new domain names to be internationalized. That means domain names could be written in scripts for Asian and Arabic languages. I guess we can expect a new rush to register popular domain names using common words. $14 million is a lot to pay for Sex.com, which may be one of the most searched-for terms in history. I wonder what someone will pay me for ??.com? [Edit -- Bugger, this forum doesn't even allow Chinese symbols] Did I even translate it correctly? How would I know? How do I enter it on my keyboard? Do I need a new keyboard? Enjoy, Robert C. Cartaino via http://www.???.com

Don't bother. The only people who would think about typing it won't be able to get to it thanks to the great firewall.

We also get into the nightmare of accented characters and glyphs that look exactly the same, but are different characters. Are we ready for códêpròjëct.com?

Domain names with unicode characters are nothing new; they have been allowed on most TLDs for several years. (remember the guy who managed to get a SSL certificate for p[cyrillic a]ypal.com?) The article isn't clear on what actually will change; to me it sounds like they want to allow registering custom top level domains. (so anyone with "at least several thousand dollars" could get paypal.cóm ???)

Comes across all right to me. I too read that article or one like it and thought that they author must have screwed up because at one point they mention ICANN saying that new domain names will have to be priced at thousands of dollars to recoup their costs but it was also just after the bit about XXX domain so I'm not sure if they meant xxx domains or all new domains. I can imagine all the utility software around the world that is going to break when domain names and email addresses start coming up in Unicode characters.

My bad. I forgot about the RSS. I was trying different ways to get the Chinese/Unicode characters to show up in the post. I didn't know the edited message would keep getting re-sent out.
