Has anyone considered, or actually gone through with, switching to a different keyboard layout other than QWERTY? I keep hearing excellent arguments in favor of the Dvorak layout. Personally I would like to stay with QWERTY because there's practically no risk of happening upon a system that doesn't use it, but I'm itching for the speed and practicality that Dvorak promises. What does everyone else think? - I am Sparticus.

You can get programs that simply remap your current Qwerty keys to the Dvorak layout (Of course you would have to either label the keys your self, or memorize the layout).

So, where are you seeing these good things about the Dvorak layout? And what are they? John

Go to Control Panel, Keyboard, Input Locales and click Add; then select US-Dvorak in the second combo box. Sparticus wrote: Has anyone considered, or actually gone through with, switching to a different keyboard layout other than QWERTY? Yes, I've been typing in dvorak for a few years. I learned with a DOS typing tutor called kpdvorak, and practised in text adventure games until I was proficient. These days my roommate and I type in only dvorak on our computers (still on qwerty keyboards, with the Windows keyboard mapped to dvorak). While there is not much speed gain for people that are already at around 100 wpm (as we were), it is definately much more comfortable. The only single disadvantage of using it primarily is that when you go use a qwerty keyboard, you have to look at the keys again :) It takes a few seconds to get back into the qwerty mindset. Other than that, it's fun and fulfilling. I'd recommend it to everybody. - Jason (SonorkID 100.611) The Code Project - Orange makes the art grow fonder

I actually use Dvorak, so here's the reverse: Dvorak: Ahh this is crazy!! Qwerty: Ajj Kjg; g; ioa/t!! I've been using Dvorak for a year or two now (I started a thread here about it when I switched) and I like it. I actually popped my keys out with a screwdriver and put them back in the Dvorak layout. With Dvorak I can type 'the' without moving my fingers from the home row, but with Qwerty my fingers must move off the home row for every letter. The thing I like best is that the layout of the keys makes sense and I wish I'd never learned qwerty. If memory serves, the reason we use QWERTY is because the Dvorak keyboard is too *easy* to use. Back in the day of typewriters (anyone seen one recently?? :-D), when people would type with Dvorak, the typewriters couldn't keep up, so the decision-makers changed the keyboard to something slower - QWERTY. Now, this could all be BS, and I look like a complete tool now, or people will be wow-ed by knowledge, and I'll look smart. :-D
