I am designing a phonetic converter program which converts english text to a domestic language. Say I type "hello" in english then equivalant text will be displayed on the other language. I did it by checking each letter, and writing code for each conditions. So there is many "if,else" checkings. Later I found it's very tough to maintain. So I am looking for a better method. Any ideas ? I have seen a text-speech program named "Talkit" which speaks the provided text. I guess it understands the provided text. What would be the idea behind that ? And I wonder the same can be applied in my case ? How do I start searching for it ? Any hints will be helpful. "It's not a programming question, I belive"

Text has nothing to do with phonetics. This is a programming question, place it in the DB section as an intro to database will shed some light.
