Best gaming laptop

My father, who's old enough to know better, is addicted to video games and wants a laptop. An Alienware is obviously first choice, but they are too expensive. Is there a unit around the 1-1.5K mark that would be suitable for playing the latest and greatest (eg Crysis) and is still affordable?

Can't he go for a desktop? I dont think we can get a decent gaming laptop for Crysis within 1.5k.

I believe Acer has one right now that is in that range. Looks pretty good. I've had very bad experiences with gaming laptops. They just cant handle the continuous heat. I've gone through two, both of which have had their video cards melt down more than once even though they were propped up and fans forced to high (warranty 4tw I guess). I'd try to talk him into a portable desktop instead. IE: a shuttle barebones box :)

I have to second a Shuttle. I've had an xPC ( SD37P2 ) for about 18 months and it's great: quite, powerful and the size a computer should be. Just don't get a passive cooled GPU, cos it won't fit :|

There are some guys here at my office that have Dell XPS laptops (Studio 17) and say they can run anything out there today. Dell XPS Laptops[^]

It was around 2k and I like the performance. At 17" widescreen it is massive and the battery life is around 90 minutes but I am happy.

Sager[^] A few folks at my prev job did a lot of research into dev machines and found Sager. For the price you can't get more. I've had mine for 8 months. Great customer service. Love it..
