Yeah.. Either could be smart or desperate move. One thing for sure. McCain just lost the credibility for the 'experience' (given no experience for Palin) question that he posed for Obama.

Anybody that has honestly followed McCain's political path knows he had no creditability going into this election.

Be that as it may, she has held an excutive position for two years, he has been in the U.S. Senate for 3 years.

I read his choice as being mindful of the "change" plank Obama has been trying to present. She's young and hot, and barring any undisclosed life threatening illness, she'll definitely out-live McCain.

Of course. But it wasn't clear that that was the one and only issue that mattered to him. I frankly don't give a damn what the next president's position on abortion is. Given all the real problems we need to confront, that issue pales to insignificance. I'm VERY tired of electing Presidents just because of this one issue. It won't make one whit of difference, since the veto and filibuster proof congress will not be allowing any pro-life supremes for some time to come. That battle was lost in 2006, probably forever. For McCain and the GOP to continue focusing exclusively on that one issue is stupid and disqualifies them from leading.

Hear hear! Some needs to tell the Republican party that the twentieth century wants its issues back. Anyone who votes for or against a candidate based on their position on abortion probably wears polyester leisure suits.

My theory is that most Republicans with any brains - and there are plenty of them - have written off this election. (There's nothing that says that Romney wasn't offered the VP job before Palin, you know.) They're satisfied to wait until 2012 when they can be anti-Washington and will have four years of tax-and-spend to run against.

I am not sure it was about appeasing the base. I wouldn't have chosen her, but neither does it make me mad enough to stay home. I think he was trying to "play safe" by picking someone who will piss off the least.

Evidently McCain is hiding some Polyester suits somewhere

That's the problem with officers who don't retire until they've got 30 in. They have no idea how to wear civilian clothes. ;)

Nope. Stupidest thing he could have done, IMO. Palin is a committed right-to-life candidate  (her main qualification to get picked). She represents a move to the right for McCain, at a time when he should have moved to the center. That choice will cost him the election, because the right wing base still won't show up at the polls for him, but Palin will put off independents , Hillary Democrats, and centrists. It will certainty cost McCain my vote, since it says the only issue he and the Republicans care about is abortion, and that at the expense of everything else. Obama is right, McCain only offers 4 more years of the Bush mindset. At this point I'm done with the GOP. Guess all that remains is the Libertarians...

He may well have gained my vote though. I don't know Palin well but if she is a true conservative, I'll vote for her. BTW, libertarians suck.

Chaining ourselves to the moral high ground does not make us good guys. Aside from making us easy targets, it merely makes us idiotic prisoners of our own self loathing.
