Some years ago (more than 5, less than 10) I saw a movie that I can't remember the name to. I'm hoping someone here has seen it and can remember the name. The plot goes something like this: All the inhabitants of a small town in Colorado (I think) go missing. A team from the government goes in to investigate. They find random body parts (an arm or a leg) in a few houses, and find one room full of things like false teeth, replacement hips, surgical pins, etc all in a pile. It looked like something ate the poeople and spat out the undigestable pieces. The first night in the town the government team is attacked by several prehistoric looking creatures. Eventually they bring in an "expert" who had an article published in a tabeloid magazine. The article is about some ancient base hydro-carbon lifeform that absorbs organic matter (like the blob). The expert believes this lifeform is what really killed the dinosaurs, and now it's come back. I can't remember how the movie ends other than the lifeform (through absorbing the people in the town) has come to believe that it is all-powerful and a diety. The investigating team trick it into coming out in the open and destroy it. Does anybody know the movie of which I speak?

It was 'Phantoms', which was a story by Dean Koontz. It had Rose McGowan, Ben Affleck and Peter O'Toole in it: Phantoms[^]

I don't remember a movie with that story line, but there is a book called Phantoms by Dean Koontz which is very similiar to that plot... not sure if movie was based on that book or not.

Yep, that's it. Thanks. Now I need to get the book. It's probably better than the movie.

You're right, it's Phantoms. They did make a movie out of it. I'm gonna get the book and read it.

I read the book before the movie was made. Surprisingly, the movie was just as good as the book, IMHO, which is a rare thing. Peter O'Toole makes any movie great - I just love that guy! On a sideline, I just got "Pet Sematary" from Neflix today. It's another movie that was very well translated from the book. The original book was very disturbing and the movie is an excellent interpretation.

The book was not bad. The movie was pretty faithful to it. Nice scenery.

Don't think I read that one... but did quite a few of his books as a teenager. Dark rivers of the heart was probably the best I read. Have you seen any other movies based on his books? E.g. Hideaway (quite old now) and another one about a plane crash and a kid's voice on the black box saying "are we recording.. are we recording" or something.

                    That was outstanding.

A human being is part of the whole called by us universe, a part limited in time and space. We experience ourselves, our thoughts and feelings as something separate from the rest. A kind of optical delusion of consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from the prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty… The true value of a human being is determined primarily by the measure and the sense in which they have obtained liberation from the self. … We shall require a substantially new manner of thinking if humanity is to survive. (Albert Einstein, 1, 1954)
