Career day presentation ideas
-
I volunteered to speak at my daughter's school for career day next month and had wondered if any of the CP parents had done this and wouldn't terribly mind sharing presentation ideas with me. I had spoken at career day last year, but I don't think hearing me prattle on about writing code to manage CDC epidemiological studies had been terribly interesting to 100+ 7 graders. :wtf: Perhaps some sort of gee whiz application running on my laptop/overhead projector might be an idea, but any help or advise would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

There's this Dilbert strip where Dilbert is talking to a bunch of schoolchildren about what engineers do. He begins by saying he sits all day in a big box, and by the time he gets to the part about slavishly obeying a boss with the brains of a baboon, he gets thrown out. Sadly, I can't find it on Google. [edit]I think it's described here[^] [/edit]
Cheers, Vıkram.

Bring a bag with a loaf of bread, peanut better, jelly, and a plastic knife. Explain to the children how computers work and how programmers break up complicated everyday problems into simple steps that a computer can follow easily. Then instruct the class to tell you how to make a PBJ, follow the instructions literally and humor and learning will ensue.

Most of this sig is for Google, not ego.No peanut butter! You'll get in trouble with the school peanut butter police. Don't you know there might be a student in the school who is allergic to peanuts, and peanut allergies can be deadly if there's even the slightest bit of contact? (Disclaimer: I don't have a peanut allergy, myself, but I have a friend who is allergic and who somehow miraculously managed to avoid contact all through school with all the other students who had PB&J sandwiches (including me!) without the help of the peanut butter police. Your mileage may vary. See back of box for details.)
Caffeine - it's what's for breakfast! (and lunch, and dinner, and...)

Clearly you would have to clear it with the teacher first. Since many students bring PB&J to lunch I would assume schools have a method in place to segregate the affected children. However, you can always change it to Banana Sandwich but children just don't like traditional southern food any more.

Most of this sig is for Google, not ego.Yeah, when we shop for my son's classroom we have to buy sunflower butter and soy "cheese".
I can imagine the sinking feeling one would have after ordering my book, only to find a laughably ridiculous theory with demented logic once the book arrives - Mark McCutcheon

Most of this sig is for Google, not ego.At least from the cases where it makes the news the school either doesn't care (or actively conspire against by trying to ban the kid's life saving epi-pen) and the parents of the kid with the allergies demand the school adopt fascist policies to wrap their precious darling in cotton, or the school adopts fascist polices on it's own and the parents of other students go nuts over the jack booted thugs in the school board. Presumably the majority of cases are handled sanely by making sure all the relevant faculty know how (and have access to) administer a shot of epinephrine and don't try to do a blanket ban on anything that might have came within a mile of a peanut never get press attention.
