Today's topic is, dum dum dum dum.... explorer yet again. Beating on a dead horse for three days in a row. We all know it doesn't keep view preferences and arbitrarily changes them, doesn't have "up" button, but there are two more "features" that are annoying as hell. 1. In an effort to be more flashy and user friendly whenever you drag and drop something in Vista explorer, you get shown a semi-transparent thumbnail under your mouse cursor with file/folder preview that you're dragging. And I'm sure someone else thought it would be helpful. Except it's not. If I'm drag/dropping a folder or a file, I already know what it is, I don't need a reminder in the form of a thumbnail. However, now, because the damn thumbnail is so big, I have trouble seeing where I'm actually dropping it. Now every time I have to pause for a second or two before I drop the file just to make sure I drop it in the right place. Thanks again Vista. 2. Full row selection in new Vista explorer has got to be the "feature" that is single handedly responsible for screwing up explorer. In the XP explorer if you wanted to select or open a file, you had to explicitly click on the filename. In the Vista explorer you can click on any spot within the row to open the file, except for the whitespace after the filename and the next column and the whitespace after the last column. Helpful? Yes, just about as helpful as Indian speaking CSR telling me to reboot my computer when my DSL goes down. Now if I need to select a bunch of files to copy them, the most common operation performed with Explorer, I have to aim for the whitespace immediately after the filename or whitespace after the last column. If I attempt to start selection in the size column like I used to under XP, in Vista it drags and drops single file. So yet again, I have to spend more time performing the same operation under Vista than I did under XP. Thanks Microsoft. BTW this not only screws up selection, but right click as well because if you right click in the size column you're bringing context menu for the file. Thinking of creating a new folder? Think again you peon and click where you're supposed to. Apparently there is a fix for full row selection, but it requires meddling with the registry. And get this, apparently full row selection is applied individually to every folder. So one, you have to fix the registry for every folder you already created on your computer, and then set a flag that says every new folder created must not have full row selection. Talk about using cannon

I was getting ready to pick todays post apart but I'll have to give you that one, it does make things more difficult if you don't know how to use the keyboard shortcuts.

Well, at least it is the reason why I haven't switched to Vista yet. If I am to hand over 150 EUR (for my desired flavour), I require a working file-browser. The browser in Vista is the work of a lunatic, and I refuse to live with that.

You mean Alt+F+W+F for new folder? Yeah, that's fast and intuitive way to create new folder. If they made it F7 the way it used to in NC/et al. that I admit would have been helpful, Alt+F+W+F is not. And pray tell me what shortcuts do I use to select every other file in Explorer?

Do you mean invert the selection? Alt+E,I There are some improvements, like being able to interact with the header control via the keyboard. This might not be useful to you but there are plenty of people who don't use a mouse (probably some who don't even have one!). Remember MS is trying to create an operating system that can be used by the majority not the minority.

If you meant every other file in a list then you can hold down the control key while using the up/down arrows to move and the space bar to select / deselect.

I'm not trying to invert selection. I'm trying to select new files. Invert selection shortcut is not useful in this case.

I have heard this before but don't know what the problem is. It does have a breadcrumb trail so you can get the next higher directory with a single click. It may not look the same but the functionality is the same and is enhanced in that you can click on not only the next higher directory but a few more above that (depending on directory name length) with a single click. Even if you name your directories with very long names you can get to any directory in the tree with at most 2 clicks. This is an improvement over the previous interface, albeit different. I think if you tried Windows Mojave (Vista without the preconceived aversion) you might like the interface. I know it would take a while to get used to the new interface but once you do it is quite workable. I use XP at work and Vista at home and now that I have learned the Vista UI I can do everything I could with XP and in some cases more.

Agreed 100%. It also makes marquee selection harder - you can't start a marquee in the currently-selected row because that does a drag/drop instead. It also makes dropping into Explorer harder, because dropping anywhere on a folder's row will drop into that folder, and dropping on a file's row will run that file with the dragged thing on the command line. So when I drag in, I have to aim for the two pixels in between rows, or hope that the window is big enough to have blank space below the last item to use as a target.
