I take there's no more legitimate crime to prosecute in Japan? Kudos to them!

I don't know anything about Maple Tree but in some games the account and its items could be worth a considerable amount of money. Nuking the account would then be the equivalent of emptying someone's account and dumping all the money in the sea

As a former* player of MapleStory, I find this to be absolutely hysterical. It is a free to play game with micropayments for novelty items (including marriage permits). On the plus side, his character name is now free for him to create a new character with the recent "Pirate" job class. I've moved on to a more adult MMO, EVE Online. (And I know of another person who has written an article here that is an active member of the EVE community as well)

I don't claim to be a know it all, for I know that I am not...

I usually have an answer though.

I know nothing about the game to be honest. I'm an occasional player of Entropia Universe where some members of the community have accounts worth many $1000s and I know of people who sold WoW or Lineage accounts for loads of cash despite them not having real economies, I assumed this might be the same, if the accounts aren't worth anything I find it hard to see why the police would get involved.

I've played Entropia as well. It's not much fun to try and collect sweat off of things that are trying to kill you when you don't feel like buying the in-game currency with real money.

There's also the question of how the account was "killed". If it was a legit in game event (eg permanently fatal PvP) bringing the cops in is insane. If it was a case of logging in with his credentials and deleting the account, not having a feature to recover from oops/hacks in the software is equally insane.

MapleStory does not have ANY PvP. :)

The article mentions that she had passwords etc so I assumed that she'd clicked the "delete my account" button or equivalent. If it's in game PvP it's seriously funny and I can't see what the fuss is about

I just stopped playing Eve about two weeks ago. Nice game, but it really is repetitive and didn't care for the "social" aspects and how impersonal it was. Was an old EQ then WoW player. Hated WoW after awhile so moved to EQ2...got tired and then Eve. Warhammer Online! I'm back with my old friends, some I haven't spoke to in years and having fun again, which is the whole idea for playing any game.
