I live in the state of West Bengal, where it is pretty safe for women. And even in places where the danger is there, the situation is certainly not as bad as the article says. Stray incidents happen, but then they happen everywhere. Just the fact that a dumb journalist could not find a better topic for a story to justify his/her job doesn't make the situation like he/she says it is. Woman themselves are now more conscious of the "danger" and are better prepared to deal with any unpleasant situation that arises.

I think it has more to do with societies values than law enforcement. Why do some men find it acceptable to rape a stranger, but not for this to occur to a family member ? Regardz Colin J Davies

I wonder what is happening with that newspaper. Are they trying to highlight this to get things done or are they using others suffering to sell newspapers even if it means that more people live in fear ? Elaine (fluffy tigress emoticon) Would you like to meet my teddy bear ?

The article is a hyped up version of reality. It's simply an unjust exagerration, unjust in the sense it's an insult to Indian women to be picturised as weak immobile creatures who's main purpose in life is made out to be to avoid getting raped. I think the reporter who wrote it wanted to write a dramatic piece. Regards, Nish p.s. I felt I should post this reply so that people won't jump to wrong conclusions about women in India.

I don't think it's that uncommon in the rest of the world. There is big news over here because a group of gang rapists have been caught and the leader sentenced to 55 years in jail. His brother had an IQ of 67 and so got a lesser sentence of 25 odd years. The mother continues to publically plead their innocence - none so blind, I guess. I personally think that rapists should all line up before the small guillotine, as Rowan Atkinson once suggested in a sketch of his. But Elaine is also right - the papers have no interest in facts, or in the public good. They are looking for a story that will sell, regardless of if it is 100% accurate, or how it affects others.
