I'm a bit excited because there's a 35% discount at one book house here for all books in their SF collection, and I'm gonna spend some cash on that. The titles that I've chosen are: H2G2 Dune (the initial 6 volumes) Ender's Game & Ender's Shadow The Mars Trilogy (Red Mars, Green Mars and Blue Mars) I can't go wrong with these, can I? The only SF I've read so far is some Asimov, Childhood's End by Sir Arthur C Clarke and Starship Troopers.

Get Asimov's robot series and foundation series. Classics, pure and simple. Dune, the original ones by Herbert rock.

J. Cherryh: Pride of Chanur, the Faded Sun trilogy Allen Steele: Orbital Decay, Lunar Descent Almost anything by these authors is good.

*Snap* re the Heinlein! Can't stand this hijacking of sci-fi by fantasists... CJ Cherryh's "hard" sci-fi is truly great though...

I'd recommend (in no particular order): Stephen Donaldson's "Gap" series; C J Cherryh's "Downbelow Station, "Cyteen" and others in that "future" (not her fantasy stuff, unless you're into that sort of nonsense...); Just about anythihg by Greg Bear; "Snow Crash" by Neal Stephenson is a legend in it's own time - a real classic; And if you haven't read the graphic novel "The Watchmen" by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons you really really should... I've just re-read it and it still blows my mind... ..and any early Heinlein for some old classics ("The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress", "Stranger In A Strange Land", etc...) /edit - and Philip K Dick, of course... /edit

To my mind Iain M Banks' Excession is one of the best books ever written.

Agreed. I like all of Cherryh's hard SF (even the interminable 'Foreigner' series). I'm just not in to fantasy anymore. My inclination is to grab a P90[^] and shoot until the various goblins, orcs, and faeries aren't quite so annoying.

Enything in the Ender Wiggin stuff is fantastic. The Mars stuff is good. Never read Dune but the loyal following of the books at least should tell you everything. Remember one thing, "The Enemy's Gate Is Down".

Dude! You *have* to correct that ASAP! At least the first, fifth, and sixth novels. The later one by his son are largely crap, so probably not worth the effort unless you become really curious about where they take things.

Read Ender's Game then Ender's Shadow. Thought provoking and incredible, esp. the second. I read different authors dependiing on my mood, e.g. Iain M. Banks 'Culture' books are major works that take time and build incredibly complex storylines, Tanya Huff's military books are real slam bang.

Some others might be anything by Peter Hamilton (Night's Dawn, Fallen Dragon, et al), ditto for Greg Bear (Eon, Forge of God, Vitals, just to name a few), Ian Douglas is fun if you military sci-fi, and Stephen Baxter has some good stuff.

Cell (more horror then SF), by Steven King is fairly entertaing. I think he wrote it because he hates people who talk on cell phones at resturants, so he wrote horrific telepathic killer zombie book about these "rude people".

Haven't read that particular one, but for a man who churns out books at the rate he does, SK is actually a damn good writer. He's earned his fame and fortune by virtue of his writing, not (just) because so many have been made into films.

Anything by Niven and Pournelle is decent, especially Footfall. If you can find it, Anvil of the Heart, by Bruce T. Holmes is good. Stone, by Adam Roberts was fantastic!

For some more recent good work (particularly if you like Heinlien): John Scalzi : Old Man's War, The Ghost Brigades, The Last Colony. All three are most enjoyable.

Was going to recommend that and Cryptonomicron

Read Cryptonomicon, then his Baroque Cycle. Those are some of the best books I've ever read. And to tack on my recommendation list: Jack McDevitt - three to start with are The Engines of God, Ancient Shores, and Eternity Road. The first is part of a series, the latter two are standalone George R. R. Martin - start with A Game of Thrones Allen Steele - Coyote, Coyote Frontier, Coyote Rising, and Spindrift Eric Brown - Helix and Kéthani

Haven't read that particular one, but for a man who churns out books at the rate he does, SK is actually a damn good writer. He's earned his fame and fortune by virtue of his writing, not (just) because so many have been made into films.

I'm more of a Dean Koontz fan, but I finished all his books, Cell is the second of of SK's I'm on. Koontz is prolific as well but not as much success in films.
