Stan wouldn't fall for such a cheap trick. He is to smart for it. But I bet someone will, I just don't know who. :)

Taking advantage of his last 4 days, eh? What will you focus on after he's gone?

Too bad no one cares about Latin American & Third World politics. It has far more slapstick comedy than American politics.

And keystone cops? ;) Anybody who ignores Brazil, at the least, is kidding themselves. I may have been more critical of it than you felt comfortable with at times, but in many ways it may be the last best hope of the western hemisphere. That said, President Lula either doesn't translate well, or has a tendency to put his foot in his mouth. Someone should tell him that there are far more important reasons why Obama was elected than his skin color.

On good side, hear from time to time about how well Chili and Costa Rica are doing (is it true?), one of my cow-orkers here's mother retired to Costa Rica and he is planning to retire there himself (might have to check it out myself, on some vacation). On the negative side hear constantly hear about drug wars and government corruption in Mexico. Don't hear too much about Argintina.

They're having another major round of financial/foreign exchange problems. A combination of global and local problems made worse by their having defaulted on large amounts of debt during their last crisis, resulting in foreign lenders being extremely reluctant to extend them any credit now. Recently the govt nationalized private retirement savings. (For anyone in the US this is the equivalent of having your IRA/401k/403b's confiscated for current govt spending and more Ponzi Bonds entered into the social security vault).
Today's lesson is brought to you by the word "niggardly". Remember kids, don't attribute to racism what can be explained by Scandinavian language roots. -- Robert Royall

Wow! Makes one think twice about contributing to ones own 401k/ira contributions if when all this bailout debt gets out of control.

By far his greatest talent. Personally, I think his greatest achievements are in the things he didn't do. He could have been much worse president.

Chile is a more interesting story. Their economy is getting diversified (natural resources, services, etc.), not growing just in one sector. Costa Rica is more in the tourism area but are doing nice, too.

They're decadent. They go from one fiscal crisis to another and always downhill. It will take a long time before they discover fiscal responsibility again.

I wouldn't worry too much. That sort of grab is about the only thing I could see that would actually route the dems from power as quickly as the most overly optimistic reps are predicting. My guess is it'll take until the middle of the next decade before a combination of victory disease and everything's the fault of the people in charge triggers a change results in another flip flop.
