You will just have to ask. Is it the first requirement of the job? Or is it at the bottom of the list. If it is at the top then you probably need to know tcp/ip networking and something about http. If it is at the bottom then I wouldn't worry about it.

I didn't get any requirements for the signature

10:1 they want you to know that Web Services use http over tcp/ip when the position does not require C++ or C. Actual knowledge of winsocks could put you at a detriment if you are speaking to a non-technical user who will assume your use of different buzzwords translates into lack of skill. Personally, if I listed such a description I would be expecting someone to write a low-level communication layer or an actual web server.

This is probably a little more than what I am looking for when I put that on a job application. However I would like applicants to know what an IP address, DNS, router, switch are and at minimum know how to set an IP address in windows. With that said I agree with the other poster you will have to ask to really know what they are getting at.

I was at a job where TCP/IP was listed as a requirement. When I began work the custom communication protocol that used over TCP had been designed to pass in order and time stamps in case the data was sent out of order. I will leave the funny part for those experienced with TCP/IP.

Been there, done that... :-O Ten years ago I saw a piece of hardware that was designed to work over a serial null modem cable be moved to TCP/IP, with no change in the communications protocol at all. Yes it worked, but it was very cumbersome over dial-up internet. X| There's nothing quite like sending an acknowledgement to acknowledge that you got the first acknowledgement.

I had almost forgot and your post just reminded me: A company I just taught a .NET training is custom implementing from scratch what you just described. I have never seen so many ack's over TCP before and in C# no less. It was funny. No amount of documentation I provided from the MSDN would steer them away from the necessity of ACK's on everything.

Maybe know how to plug in a network cable and use a Web browser. On a tangential note, a job description I (partially) read this morning was looking for experience with .net and link. Sure I have experience with link, with C on both DOS and OpenVMS, but what has that got to do with .net? :sigh:

Actually i'd say the person in HR wrote exactly what was said to them by the person dictating the job spec - there are loads of examples of this type of miscommunication in job ads.

 Sounds like a DoD requirement. "The protocol shall utilize existing standards to the extent practicable (TCP, UDP, IP, HTTP, etc) excepting that, in all cases, data packets shall be received in the order sent, or re-assembled as needed to restore the original order. Additionally, appropriate time stamps shall be added to each packet to ensure temporal contiguity of packet reception. It shall be a design goal, though not a requirement, that network connections be established without the need for retaining state information to maximize the utilization efficiency of the available pool of ports enabled for this service."

In all fairness, some DoD TCP/IP traffic travels over radio and other network devices less reliable than dial up.
