So I'm in the middle of reloading my laptop after a failed attempt at trying out Windows 7 (It loaded fine, and I was liking it... until my wireless driver repeatedly blue screened the damn thing...). I've got all of Toshiba's rubbish removed, and I go to install WMDC to sync my XDA. The website goes to check I have a valid copy of Windows (which I do), tries to install the Genuine Advantage thing, and then just stops... Great. So, I go to plan B, and try validate the alternate way... and get a 404 error on the website... Microsoft haven't even bothered to make it a helpful one, it's just a bog-standard (and possibly insecure?) IIS error... 404 Error.[^] Joy. Sometimes I wonder why I support Microsoft as much as I do... Edit: And just to annoy me some more, the XDA's original disk has vanished (admittedly not MS's fault, but still ) Edit 2: It seems I'm not very clear... To clarify: irritation was aimed at MS's website (which, incidently, has now started working properly again) and the three hours I wasted trying to get one bit of software for Vista. I actually quite liked the Windows 7 Beta, and once Ralink release a compatible driver I'll try again. As for the disk, that was only to be used as an alternate source for the software MS wouldn't let me get at.

I'm not angry about the Beta. I'm cross that I can't get at the software I need to run for their current supported OS.

You lose the install disk for a badly written driver and blame Microsoft? Toshiba may make nice hardware, but their software sucks big time. If someone gave me a Toshiba, I'd sell it on eBay and buy something else.

Err... I don't think you followed... The install disk was for my XDA (A handheld). I was going to use it instead of downloading the most up-to-date version of WMDC (the disk is a bit old), the software I am getting annoyed at not being able to get. As for the badly written driver, that's hardly Toshiba's fault. It was produced by Ralink, and incidently it's also not their fault it doesn't work under Windows 7, they've not exactly had ages to write one.

I'll only buy HP printers, though I've only had two! My 4P lasted fourteen years! (My father-in-law and former business partner also had a 4P last more than 12 years.) Hopefully my P2015dn will last as long. But, you're right. The printer package for my P2015dn is not only huge, but includes a bunch of junk I don't need and aren't terribly well written. In the past, HP computers have been king of installing junk. Don't know if they're any better now.

That's the very first thing I do when setting up any PC. Actually, I reformatted and reinstalled my last two computers from scratch. And Dells don't come with as much junk.

I've had a little more than two. From the top of my head I remember an Inkjet 560C, a 3650, a PSC 2510 and now two Officejet 2610 (at home and at the office). And I have recommended my customers many more HP (some big Laserjets). They work great, altough their cartidges are a bit expensive. But so far, I am one happy customer. But if we talk about their drivers, that's another story... Just downloading a half-a-gig file for the drivers is not nice. It's a good thing they at least inclueded a minimum driver-only installation.
