Since we are arguing semantics here with this question, America did not existing during time period in which your question would have been valid. There is a specific reason for this, and it is not, "Because it was the United State's and not America" but it does follow a related theme. Can you guess my line of thinking? Hint: Coffee, Cocaine, and the Capitol.

I'm not sure what you're getting at. Is it that there were "New Spain, New England, New France, New Holland, etc."? I would still argue that, even that being the case, "The United States of America" didn't exist until John Hancock, as President of the Continental Congress, signed the Declaration of Independence, and even then it only existed on paper. The War of Independence still had to be fought (and won (who won the War of Independence?)) before "The United States of America" was a reality. Treasure hunt: Did you spot my reference to the play/movie "1776" among my posts yesterday? :-D

I didn't catch your 1776 reference. America didn't exist as a term for the United States until the 1900's. Before 1900 America would have needed to be fully qualified since the common name for the country was Columbia.
