First free breakfasts, now this: A London restaurant has come up with a novel idea to drum up custom in the economic downturn: letting customers decide how much they want to pay for their meal.

Being compelled to talk in a restaurant? I'll have the steak and you might as well take the penny with you.

If they know up front what you'll be paying, I doubt you'll find a penny's worth of steak a filling meal.

Pay a fair price and no one is robbed. (Fare Price? no? ok please yourselves!) I would consider £7 or £8 for a Steak Chips and Peas in a London Restaurant about right. (Angus Steakhouses charge way more than that and are not even any good)

A VERY OLD idea: went to a restuarant like this in the early eighties where you could pay what you thought the meal was worth. It was at the corner of Cricklewood Lane and Finchley Road but I don't recall the name (long gone, I suppose). I did hear the staff say to anyone who left too little 'Since you felt the meal was worth so little you won't be returning, will you?' or words to that effect, quite loudly. I recall paying about £30 for 2 people, 3 courses and a bottle of wine. It was okay, nothing special.

What? Are you kidding? You pay that much in a crappy greasy spoon in London. You don't get out much, do you?

I meant that would be a fair Price! I DO pay far more for what is just pie and chips! I was in The Ivy (See I do get out!) and paid about £80 for a 3 courser with beer. (OK it is a fantastic Restaurant, and there is a huge waiting list, but ...) But for a quick lunch, I think that is the Right Price, regardless of what you are actually charged now! If they opened a Denny's here I would be happy! (I wouldn't even care about the free breakfasts) My local does a carvery for £3.50, 3 meats, Roast potatos, peas, cauliflower, carrots, cabbage, Roast Onions and thick gravy, and it is packed all the time and makes a fortune. (£4.50 after 5.00pm and £6.00 on a Sunday, but still Very Good Value, and no washing up!)

Here, at a Spur steakhouse, a steak (fillet 270g) and chips will set you back about £7, but at finer eateries you could pay up to twice that.
