What were her parents thinking?[^] I can't imagine I would sit back and let my kid starve like that! I'd be at the very least sitting in a hospital emergency room - or force-feeding if I could work out how. The medical services certainly let the family down, but how sick does your kid have to be before you march into the hospital - hone the news services, do everything you can?

Yeah, when a child is doing something that could kill themselves (not eating, running into traffic, getting on a roof with an umbrella and sense of adventure).. I think it's perfectly acceptable to explain the error of their ways with the back of your hand. Yes, gasp and horror, it's not PC. But it is an effective deterrent when used sparingly and for good reason.

I caught that one earlier, if it had been either of my two I would have been in the hospital making a general nuisance of myself until I finally pissed them off enough to do something. Or call the police, in which I'd be getting the wife to whip out the 'ol cam and send it to the local news ...

for running into traffic and doing a Mary Poppins, I couldn't agree more (my Mum only really hit me once, when I followed my Dad out into a busy road without looking - scared the bejesus out of me, and I always remembered to look after that! - she also explained to me that she hit me out of fear, and not anger). But when it's a deep-set psychological problem like this, I'm not sure a slap would cut it. (although, frankly, I'd give it a try rather than sit back) I think "If you don't eat, you are going to get real sick - and it will be much worse than any rip to the dentist. i'm not going to let that happen - that's my job - so you have to eat, or I'm going to shove a hosepipe down your throat and force food down it. Let's have some soup" would be a goo start?

Just because you have procreated, doesn't mean you know diddly squat about raising kids well, just that you know something about raising kids." The parents and guardians discussed in some of the threads here have kids - but I wouldn't think I'd describe them as "knowing sh*t about raising kids". Incidentally, I'm not sure why your sarcastic attack started in the first place? I put forward an opinion regarding thrakazog's suggestion that a short sharp shock could be the non-PC answer to some kid issues. I agreed in some cases, and argued (coherently, I though, but maybe you did't understand?) that it was not the answer in other cases. Do I take it you believe corporal punishment should never be inflicted under any circumstances? Or is the opposite the case - do you put forward the argument that the disturbed child, doing themselves harm by not eating, or drinking, should just be beaten until they finish off a full English breakfast and a pint of ale? Or, were you objecting to my suggestion of force-feeding a child (or telling the child that that was their choice?) I'm genuinely interested - I don't feel I was 'shooting my mouth off', and I do feel that you were impertinent, ineloquent and rude in your response. As Samuel Butler said “Neither irony or sarcasm is argument.” so please, if you have a point, make it, and make it clearly; if you don't, then just be quiet.

No, no - you were quite rude in the post before he rightly told you to fuck off. Instead of engaging in largely irrelevant assault based on how many children this chap may or may not have, you could have simply explained the folly of his ways. You did not. This makes you a terrible person indeed.

Of course there isn't, but if you know his approach was clearly wrong (even though he at no point presented it as a THIS IS THE ONLY WAY TO DO THINGS, merely a suggestion), maybe you could have explained why instead of telling him he had no children, a fact he likely already knew. For shame! For example, you could have explained any number of interesting points: 1) we don't really know what reported is what happened, based on the newspaper article alone (which is still heavily slanted in favor of the mother), the mother's story is a little suspicious 2) that aside good luck trying to talk common sense to a girl with psychological problems 3) good luck trying to talk common sense to any kid anywhere, ever 4) or anyone on the internet 5) lollercoaster
