This was a couple of weeks ago, but well worth mentioning. I made a loop to show all of the running processes, and later added code inside the loop to kill a specific process, but I put not equal to rather than equal to. I ran the code and my computer instantly powered off with no shutdown because I killed all processes except the one I meant to kill. :omg:

That would be the mother of all bugs if released unnoticed.

The code for this really needs to go in code horrors as well. However before I'm flamed I do think that there is nothing wrong posting this in the lounge as it did make me laugh and is a good story.

There's nothing to flame here - this has to be the mother of all horrors.

Actually, the mother of all bugs is the female bug that along with the daddy of all bugs would spawn all other bugs.

Exactly, how can this pass unnoticed?

I remember one of my college mates wrote an endless loop in Concurrent-C (IIRC on Sun workstations) that brought down the entire room of machines.

Well, shit happens. :) Just like that Mars mission that crashed on entry because they expected data on metric but were given imperial values (or vice-versa).

A co-op student wrote a Unix routine which forked itself. It killed the server in less than a second from too many processes.
