that's the only part I like I'm a #$^%#^%$^%^^$^%^&%$% developer!!!!!! Give me a $%^$%^%$^%$^ menu with a WORD in it not some friggin artsy icon grrrrrrrrr you don't want to make me angry...........

Die die die! Take some kerosene soaked rags, tie them around your ankles and light them!!!!!!! I have never seen such great effort taken to screw up (not the words I'm mouthing) a perfectly good product (Office 2000)! Let's re-arrange everything into cute tool bars where no one can find a d$$$ thing! Is that the purpose of the ribbon thingie!??? Come'on simmons get the gloves on, I need to pound on someone... Jesus Christe! (that's hay-sus ;)) I will friggin PAY for microsoft not to fudge up perfectly good code. You people out there that write applications for a living, you ALWAYS need a "we got cute, go back to what you had before" check box!!!! Rant over!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I actually like the 2007 UI. Of course it took some time to get used to it, and sometimes I still have a difficult time to find an obscure feature, but overall I think everything is more organized. Remeber in Office 2003 you had menus, toolbars, context menus, those sidebars... and to find something you would have to search in several of them. At least now everything is in the same place. Anyway, once you use it for enough time, you'll learn to like it ;P

Whoa! Chill! Give it some time, and you'll grow to like it. Well, hate it less, maybe. I didn't like it when I first used it, because I had to get used to a new UI - but most shortcut keys work the same. As a casual user, it takes somewhat longer to get used to it, though.

So while i might use, say, mail merge once a year at most, there's some other user out there using it all day, every day. If you go and read some of Jensen Harris[^]'s back articles, he talks a lot about the sort of data collection they do, trying to figure out which features are most important to make easily accessible. For the most part, it's... not what i would have guessed.
Here is a suggestion for Microsoft: give us two Office products: type 1 = the most popular half of the features, with 2003 menus type 2 = the full functionality with 2007 UI both at the same price, running equally well on all modern Windows versions (2000 upwards), and clearly identified by the above definitions. Then let the market decide which one is most appreciated. If a large part of the customer base chooses the "cripled" type 1 over the latest type 2, it tells me and should tell them only offering type 2 is WRONG. And if they want to be really nice (I doubt it), let them put both in one product, and make it an option (under the Tools menu!). :)

Whoa! Chill! Give it some time, and you'll grow to like it. Well, hate it less, maybe. I didn't like it when I first used it, because I had to get used to a new UI - but most shortcut keys work the same. As a casual user, it takes somewhat longer to get used to it, though.

I had the same response. Interestingly, so did my wife and kids. My 12 year old daughter said "you can't find anything." On my second computer, I left it on since I didn't have Excel on it and figured I might need it someday. That day was about two weeks ago. I about went out of my mind trying to do the simplest things. What truly baffled me is how many things on the ribbon are used very rarely, yet sit there using up space. (I just removed all of Office 2007 but Excel from that system.)

Yeah, I've been using WinWord since V2.0 and I'll still be using Office 2003 for a good long time. The wife's (Vista) laptop came with an evaluation copy of Office 2007. We tried it, couldn't use it, haven't upgraded to the full version after the evaluation period expired. If I had my way, I would have wiped it and started over with XP and Office 2003, but she won't let me (not surprised).

The Office 2000 UI sucked. So did the Office 97 UI, so did the Office XP UI, and so did the Office 2003 UI (although IMHO, it's the best of the lot since they finally made Outlook as robust as the rest of the apps). Office has traditionally been a portrait of too many functions crammed into too little space (in terms of the on-screen GUI, the numerous contextual or modal commands, and the scripting API). I don't know whether Office 2007 has made this better or worse (supposed to be testing it, but haven't gotten around to it yet...), but don't pretend it was all that great before.

I like it too. But what I like more than the Ribbon is the live preview of changes, which totally rocks.

It has for me. A big step was not always forgetting the little arrows at the bottom of ribbon blocks are for menus!
