A Canadian judge ruled Thursday that a man accused of beheading and cannibalizing a fellow Greyhound bus passenger is not criminally responsible due to mental illness. I can understand the family's anger and it would anger me as well to see a sane man get away with murder in this manner. I can't say if this man was sane or not, but I do believe that there are legitimate times when "not guilty by reason of insanity" is the correct verdict. I find it telling that both the prosecution and the defense were both claiming he was insane.

And I don't. Neither side *cares* about actual justice; neither side *cares* about protecting society. Really? "Li did not understand his actions were wrong?" And just why should we believe the assertion of some damned psychiatrist? I think I get the "reasoning" of the psychiatrist ... the fact that he begged to be killed for what he'd "reportedly" done is the "proof" that he's innocent by reason of insanity. And, since he's innocent by reason of insanity, then clearly he could not have understood that it is wrong to murder someone.

No I won't take that responsibility based on what I read from the media or the web. If I have to pass a judgment I will have to dig out all the facts to my best ability. I may have a strong opinion about something, but that should not lead me to a careless judgement.
