Yesterday my Live Messenger was working well. Today I can't sign in, getting helpful error details of "Error code: 81000306". When I diagnose, it first hung for a long time on 'Key Ports', then suggested my firewall or proxy settings are wrong. I haven't chnaged them since Thursday! Is anyone else having Live Messenger problems today?

I have had similar problems in the past. The error-code looks awfully familiar, although my lousy memory prevents me from confirming that it is the same. My problems were caused, according to the Live Troubleshooting guide, by it not being able to access my contact list. Why that should stop it loading at all is a mystery to me. I stopped using it and moved to Thunderbird. Although there was an update to Messenger recently that I installed, lo and behold, it worked!. I now run it as a reserve to Thunderbird for the EMail function.

Oh, I have that problem too, mainly because I sometimes have a low-signal wirless connection to my laptop, and MSN/Live/whatever MS are going to call it ( ) simply stops working, even though the wirless connection is still working reasonably well. So I use another program called Pidgin which actually works and lets you sign in with pretty much any type of IM /account that ever existed :)
Lloyd J. Atkinson I used Vista the other day. It was also the last time I will ever voluntarily use the damn thing. I would rather use Windows 1.0 just because it dosent literally chew the RAM just to draw pretty colours.

I like pretty colours, and 4GB is enough for them and real work. I'll get pidgin as a backup, thanks.
