From the same poll that revealed the leftism of the Catholic Church: The Tory Party at Prayer?[^] We never expected more 'young earth creationists' to be Labour identifiers than Conservative identifiers, and we were surprised to find that the Conservative support base contains more 'atheistic evolutionists' than can be said of Labour's support base. Of course, I have always known this.

I have found in my experience "anecdotal" that just about every evangelical US bible believing (Bible is their cannon) protestant Christian to be very conservative both politically and socially, practically with no exception. Often a group whether political or religious can be identified by their enemies, and there is no love lost between socialists and the afore mentioned group.

My posting was a leg-pull. The majority of Christians in the UK, if they attend church at all, do so only at Christmas, Easter, and the occasional Wedding, Baptism, etc. Which is why the Muslims cause such consternation. They actually attend the mosque weekly, they pray daily - more than once! Now that is taking religion a bit too far. :) Catholics used to inspire this awe, too. But now, if it wasn't for the Polish immigrants, Catholic church attendances would be down to Anglican levels.

I don't find that surpising. I'm not quite an 'atheistic evolutionist' but most of my family believes I am, yet I'm as politically conservative as you can get. On the other hand, many friends and relatives are devout christians who only vote democrat. In fact, I think most people are liberal for the same reason they are christian - it makes them feel good about themselves.

Chaining ourselves to the moral high ground does not make us good guys. Aside from making us easy targets, it merely makes us idiotic prisoners of our own self loathing.

Elucidate a bit on this, will you? It almost seems as if you are paying the liberal point of view a compliment - unless, given your background, you are trying to insult Christianity. Also, does what you say apply to other religions? Are most people who profess Judiasm doing so they feel good about themselves? Sometimes you surprise me. ;)

I'm simply saying that the kind of people who embrace religion for a sense of moral clearity, are the same kind of people who embrace liberal ideals for the same reason. You might say that it gives them a sense of moral superiority. I think that is how the left has tried to position their politics far more than conservatives have - not using religion itself, but using the same kind of moral appeal that religion has traditionally used. And that probably explains the growth of liberalism and the decline of religion.

Bingo! And when "being a Christian" rubs the wrong way with "feeling good about" themselves, which will win?

If I understand what you are saying, I don't think that's simple, I'm thinking it's insightful. Although I'm wondering if you couldn't say that conservatives, too, embrace their ideals because it reinforces their view of themselves and assures them of their moral superiority. On the other hand, you may not mean any more than Ilion thinks you mean, in which case, look at the great idea I came up with! ;)
