      The issue is the cost of film development - about £12 ($18?) per 36 exposures last time I looked and likely to rise as more people go digital. It doesn't take more than a dozen reels before the cost makes a flaky digital camera look like a good alternative.

        That is painfully true. Being on a fixed income means that should my existing equipment either fail, or become prohibitively expensive, I will probably be reduced to whatever my phone provides.
