'Cause you'd spend the rest of your life dealing with IT recruiters, a fate worse than death in my opinion. Now a "reverse recipe finder" would be cool. I have a jar of Vegemite, a stale pack of milk arrowroot and half a banana, what can I make for dinner?

'reverse recipie finder' brilliant! I am on it!

A random thread of execution trying to pulsate in sync with the growing entropy of this cluttered high tech cyberspace.

OK There are lots of job sites (in Aus we mainly have Seek and CareerOne) My understanding is that they charge advertisers to place their job ads. Why doesn't some enterprising young sole (I miss out on the middle adjective) develop a site or sites to match employers with employees that is free for all, and relies on on-page advertising for funding? Once developed, surely not too expensive to keep going. Target a specific audience first (the it industry, obviously) and Bob's your uncle. Surely if it was free, all agencies would use it (assumign it is relatively easy for them to advertise on it). Structure it so that jobs are easy to allocate keywords to, and so easy to find. If you ruin with the idea and amke a few million, I wouldn't mind a slice, thanks. (of course, if you go bankrupt in the process, don't come crying to me) Or is this not a goer? Why not?

On page-advertisements can be seen as an addition to the revenue a site generates, but there is little profit in it. To illustrate, Youtube still isn't making money. Newspapers and magazines faced the same question once, and most of them still charge money to buy an issue, instead of trying to survive on the revenue that the ads generate.

There are some boards that try to match for free. You get what you pay for, and the free boards that I have seen are somewhat deserted. It would be a great way to create a lock-in effect, but somehow people associate a price with quality, and the quality that's associated with 'free' is relatively low.

I was about to post that whatsinthecupboard.com did this years ago, and thought I'd better check. It seems that they also went out of business years ago. So either it's not a viable idea, or their business model was flawed.

It probably won't work. People are dishonest and try to be the best match for everything. See Google. I query for "slaves" and ebay offers to "sell slaves at the best rates". WTF? Either Google or Ebay are being dishonest, and how could you trust other companies if these two big players mess it up?

A number of sites in the US have tried this - craigslist.com is one notable site - but all of them seem to end up charging eventually. Two reasons: * The free sites end up with a lot of garbage, which, in turn, reduces the number of job seekers. No one wants to wade through a lot of worthless posts to find decent jobs. Even a charge of $1 seems to deter the junk. * Employment ads are, frankly, cash cows. :) This is actually one of the only categories of ads that craigslist.com charges for. It only charges a few dollars, but it rakes in enough money just from this to cover all of its expenses and make a substantial profit besides. Ed
