I thought the first book was fascinating - not perfect but very good. I felt that they went down hill in sequence from there and gave up after the third one. I did buy one of the prequels written by his son - it made the third of the original series look like a work of Shakespeare. Apparently, the Muslim world has never figured out that Paul was a rewrite of Mohammed, just as Heinlein's Mike was a rewrite of Christ

I like the exposure of how religion can be used for zealotry, politics, etc. In the end it took his son to bring down the myth that was Mu'Adee (sp?). The 1st book is really good, I think, but the others seem to drag on. There's a lot more put out by the author's son and another guy, but I've not read any of them. I think Jon's right about the Muslim comparison too. It's a common theme of savior.

According to what I've read (where escapes me now) Frank Herbert set out to create a Mohammed-like character whose new, combative, religion sweeps much of what has been considered civilization before it.
