I'm sitting here talking with Nish on MSN and waiting for VS.NET to install when another friend messages me. Here is a copy/paste of the message that friend sent me: "TVs gonna suck tomorrow". Yep, nearly 3,000 people lost their lives that day and all he can worry about is that TV is gonna suck. Then again, what can I expect; this is the same person who wanted to watch comedy central for election day 'coverage'. And it's the same person who said "I think it's funny" a year ago when he found out about the attacks. I never replied to either of his remarks because I didn't know what to reply with. TV will suck. We'll have complete overkill by the media, they won't be doing it for the benefit of the victims or the survivors - only doing it for the advertising revenue. The news stations will be trying to out do each over with their coverage, trying to win the awards. 11th September is a time for rememberance and reflection, but it'll be turned into a circus in the pursuit of revenue. As for the attacks being funny, people can find humour in most tragic things. Sometimes it helps them deal. Michael Programming is great. First they pay you to introduce bugs into software. Then they pay you to remove them again.

I hope I wouldn't sink to saying anything :mad: I've said a few things about some americans attitudes but that does not reduce my compassion for those affected by the attack on the WTC. :rose: Elaine (this isn't a fluffy subject) Would you like to meet my teddy bear ?

I'd do what you did - I wouldn't say anything. After all, if you've nothing nice to say in reply, why say anything? Nevertheless, don't judge him for his apparent lack of empathy. It's the biggest single failing of humans in general, in my opinion. Empathy and mutual respect can potentially solve all the World's problems. See my non-fluffy and fixed kitty here[^]. The guy obviously doesn't know when to keep his mouth shut, if not for himself than through respect for you who obviously feels very strongly about what has happened, so just block him for the rest of the day. Take the time later on to explain why you did what you did and take it from there.

It is nearly impossible to give a true picture of what happened somewhere without some level of detail, but the detail is going to offend. i wouldn't say anything to him... probably for a long time. sounds like he has some, um, issues. ---- but, TV is gonna suck. so is radio, newspapers and every magazine for the next month. they're gonna suck, not because of the content, but because of they way that content is going to be presented. i watched some of it today, and i've been hearing it on the radio for the past week and i see it on the newsstands. everything i've seen or heard is as slick and shallow and emotionally manipulative as the spotlight athelete bits they show during the olympics. there are flags in the background, close-ups of teary eyed widows, slow motion firefighters, solemn then triumphant music, more flags, then sinister music and grainy photos of the fuckers who made the day notable. then they show the planes crash into the buildings (again, from all angles). then it repeats. maybe some people like that stuff. but to me it feels wrong to obsess over the gory details of that day. i don't need to be reminded of what happened - i haven't stopped talking about it or its consequences in the 365 days since it happened. i don't need my emotional batteries recharged. i don't need to be told how to feel or who to feel it for. so, i'm just going to keep the radio and tv off tomorrow. if anything happens, i'm sure it will show up here within seconds. i hope that doesn't sound like i want to forget about it; i don't. and i don't want others to forget about it, so i'm showing a tasteful 9/11 banner i copied from /. on all my pages tomorrow. but, i simply can't stand the weepy overwrought obsessive crap the Media is trying to dump on us. -c

I agree. No matter how they present it, it almost comes across as a celebration - this is what TV is geared towards. IMHO, a short speech, prayer, or dedication from someone who actually was involved would suffice. TV is presented largely as an escape every other day of the year; trying to place it otherwise now is insulting both to the viewers and to those who suffered on and after 9/11. For some reason, this has made me reflect on our Memorial Day. This is certainly a holiday, with families getting together, parades, lots of extra programming on TV... ...But the day starts, around here at least, with a journey out to the cemetary, where we stand quietly amongst the graves of those men who fought so many years ago. The few remaining veterans from the local VFW come out, a speech is given, a prayer is said, reminding us of the many who are not buried here and whose graves may never be known. And then we all go home. There's nothing i could see on television that could come close to being as sobering and sincere as that brief ritual.

Hello James I've already said most of this to you, but I am reposting the same here for the benefit of the thread. Some people just say things like that to hide what they actually feel. Perhaps this guy wants to show he's hard outside and doesnt care about others. Inside he might not be this bad. In fact my guess is he is scared and a coward and is just saying these things to convince himself that he is not scared! And he's too occupied in doing that to feel a humane thought for the ones who suffered last year this day. Regards, Nish

I'd agree. TV sucked here too. Lots of sensationalism, bringing lots of joy to al Queda by putting their names on everyone's lips for a day. As someone said on CP yesterday, if we didn't have this media explosion a year later, that would say something far more powerful about us as a people. Saying it's funny a year ago however qualifies your friend as a card carrying moron. Either that or he has emotional issues and says stupid things because he doesn't know how to say what he feels. The question I guess you need to ask yourself is, what sort of friend is it whose opinions you ( rightly ) hold in contempt ? My best friend lives over 1,000 klm away. I have other friends, but I admit to being happy with a fairly solitary life ( plus I have my wife and children, which makes it different ), but my life is too busy to pursue the friendship of people I do not like. Well, it's more that I've written a wrapper class for the C# XML stuff, and a GUI app that exposes it and provides a simple editor for XML/XSL and XSD. I posted to the testing forum but no-one has answered and I'm hoping to find a couple of folks willing to test it for me and comment, because it's for a magazine article and it's grown in size beyond what I am likely to be able to test as thoroughly as I would like.
