A kid tries to get an easy answer for his/her homework, a clueless guy asking some questions about basic programing (ups! ;P ), and I see lots of these kind of answers, specially from gold members and admins(Im not trying to make anybody mad :)) IS it not better not to answer those kind of post anyway? Im just wondering why anybody would do it? Excuse my english :) Hoping not to get banned for this... :laugh:
Because the genii inhabiting this place needs to vent occasionally.
The narrow specialist in the broad sense of the word is a complete idiot in the narrow sense of the word. Advertise here – minimum three posts per day are guaranteed.

Because if somebody can't use Google before they ask a question, then they don't really deserve an answer. If I'm in a good mood, I throw them the first link from Google, if I'm not, they get an annoyed answer which won't help them. Questions which plead for an answer are the most annoying
I was going to suggest dropping in a link to a Google search of "How to use Google", but that seemed a little counter-intuitive with the stated problem. ;)

You know, something I've never quite understood is the whole business of blotting out a letter or two in a naughty word, as though somehow that removes the profanity from the text. I mean, really, is there anyone out there who would look at something like, say, a**hole and not immediately read it in its original spelling? It just seems politically correct to me, a phrase that I define as an empty gesture that accomplishes nothing, but offered with the intention of trying to convince people that you really care about doing the right thing. One mighte even say that The road to Heck is paved with good intentions. :-D

Here's the problem: A large majority of us came up having to actually do the work ourselves, to find the answers. The internet was not but a blinking cursor at some Military site, Google wasn't even a glimmer in it's creator's eye and to do research, one had to go to this place called a library; it had these things called books, and card catalogs, and librarians who would help you find, the card catelog, after which, you were on your own. We could spend hours, researching projects, working in university labs on shared terminals, because most students didn't have, or couldn't afford, their own personal PCs; and for those of you that punched cards, I'm certain each of you have a "I was carrying my cards and dropped them" story ... Lord knows I do ... *sigh* ... THAT was a suck night. My point is, WE did the freak'in work. Now it seems we get students posting their ENTIRE class assignment on the boards demanding help; in some cases, these idiots actually believe that some how, they are entitled to it. Most folks here will gladly answer a question like: Hey, I have a class assignment and I'm trying to get my linked list working, I've Googled, and looked, and I can't figure out where I'm messing up on my remove node routine, here's my code. If the person asking demonstrates that they are indeed trying; but that's not what we get. We get demands for solutions, demands for answers, posting of entire assignments asking "Help me", or posts where the person has obviously done absoletly NOTHING in terms of even trying to FIND an answer. Seriously, Google hands you the freak'in answer if you just get off your ass an ask it the question! We don't want or need people like that in our industry, we have enough problems as it is, without a generation of do nothing, think nothing in-duh-viduals. THAT is why they get smart-ass answers, and WE can give them smart-ass answers, because WE have already done the work ourselves.

Lest we forget. Those who study history are doomed to watch others repeat it. Self-censorship: As for N**ass**ty words...Some forums will ban you if you have too many. And I suppose on some levels it makes you more conscious of your usage. And you never know who will choose to not read you for using the full word, but some people prefer to keep at least a vestige of the words as a form of emotional punctuation. You could also consider that it started perhaps with newspaper comics where whole words were substituted. Those who study history are doomed to watch others repeat it.

I just don't think these people stay in the industry except in small numbers. Except in the form of management. We've always had them as long as I've been around. I remember a guy putting comment statement cards in his card punched programs. The statements said "This program is stolen from [his name]". He would then, while working in the lab, dump his "extra" punch cards into the trash. Caught some people with it.

Yes, I concur, but with today's technology and the search tools available, there is just no reason I can find for these kids to be asking the kinds of questions the do; unless, of course, they aren't really kids, and it's just someone making stuff up to post in the groups hoping it spawns rants like mine, in which case, it worked. We all need help from time-to-time, but for gosh sakes, put some effort into trying to find an answer first. If I had run to my professor with questions like we get, without doing some research ahead of time, they probably would have whacked me upside the head with a text book, then handed me a campus map with an arrow pointed to the library. It's made me realize, and appreciate, why our Ada professor graded on the scale he did: 1 - A, 2 - Bs, 3 - Cs everyone else failed ... weeded out the garden. ;)

Bad Astronomy |VCF|wxWidgets|WTLOuch. Sounds like Calc 2. I think it is sad to have to deal with weed-out courses- but I also understand the need. Who wants a course too hard? Not me. But I was always good at academic matter I applied myself to so I didn't have to face it as often. And I can research with or without the internet. Re; them putting in the effort to find the answer... I doubt they get very far with forums. I've not known any where the programmers didn't spot the problem fairly quickly and glom on to the obvious solution of not giving them their answer. Ectoparasites of the internet.
