An important quality to have in a supreme court justice

"I think she'd say that her word choice in 2001 was poor."[^] This hideous parody of Jeffersonian democracy has no more prfound punch line than the supreme court. Conservative appointees are attacked viciously and openly by the democrats. Their race, their personel history, their judicial qualifications make no matter. They face a quantlet of the most mean spirited vitriole that the democrat party and the mainstream media can spew at them if they even remotely demonstrat a tendency to decide cases based upon any respect at all for the original intent of the constitution. But let a leftist be nominated, someone who, like our own glorious leader, has demonstrated nothing but contempt for the constitution and a seething hatred towards the nation itself throughout their entire lives, and absolutely no criticism at all is supposed to be made. It is simply staggering how the democrats continue to get away with this. On second thought, however,it really isn't, is it? This is the very society the collectivist have been carefully constructing for the last century or so. Well done, I must say...
Chaining ourselves to the moral high ground does not make us good guys. Aside from making us easy targets, it merely makes us idiotic prisoners of our own self loathing.

I'm glad to see you posting - with everything that's going down in the auto industry, I was getting concerned - just a tiny bit, of course.

One of the things I have been struck by is how the Democrats are screaming and shouting about how terrible any attack on Sotomayor would be when they are the past masters of nastiness when it comes to Supreme Court Nominees. Ruth Bader Ginsberg (for instance) got a fair hearing, some probing questions, and a vast majority of the votes of the Republican Senators. Compare this to the treatment of Bork, Thomas, or Alioto. All of whom had to listen to viscious personal attacks and out-and-out slander under the guise of a Senate "hearing." Yes, there has been some loud noises made by Rush and some of the other entertainers who make their money and their ratings by being as outrageous as possible, but the actual elected Republicans (and many consertaves who have not been elected) have treated the issue of racial bias with concern, simultaneously maintaing respect for her and dignity for themselves.

What have you heard Limbaugh say about this that was 'outrageous' in any way? Limbaugh's point has been consistently that even though there is no doubt she is going to get the seat, this is an opportunity for republicans to define Obama. If anything, he is about the only one stating an opinion about this that isn't racist. How racist is it to believe that every single hispanic will react in exactly the same way to any criticism of this women?

Very. I have heard some react quite negatively to her and to what she said. The world isn't as simplistic as you need it to be.

That was exactly my point. It isn't Limbaugh, me, or any other conservative who is making that point. It is those who support her selection, and the republicans who are so afraid of the hispanic vote that they would support he regardless of her qualifications. That is why Limbaugh's voice is more important now than it has ever been. All he is saying is for republicans to stand for values and principles not based upon fear of changing demographics.

Limbaugh's voice serves Limbaugh - first, last, and always. He is a superb performer who gets paid a lot of money for getting people to listen to commercials. He always says what his audience wants to hear and he never challenges them to really analyse or think for themselves. (That's why they're called ditto-heads.) He is just as important and just as necessary as the dancing bear that traveled with the snake-oil salesmen back in the 1800's. Like most mass media types he panders to the lowest common denominator, because that is what sells the most soap. In other words, Stan, he is all about demographics.

Why? Limbaugh is the one, the only one, out there saying that hispanics are not a mindless mob. Appeal to their reason and at least some of them will respond favorably.

Thats complete bullshit. First, a ditto head is simply someone who agrees with some version of the statement "Rush is really great". It isn't an endorsement of his actual views. It simply evovled as a way of saving air time so that Rush would have more time to speak. If you had ever actually listened to his show, you would understand that. He is, in fact, the last conservative standing. He is holding a line and refuses to back down. That obviously scares you as much as it does Obama, or anyone else with a vested interest in destroying the traditional framework of American society. I sure as hell hope he is being paid well for that, he deserves every penny of it.

Really? You don;t happen to have a citation, do you? I just spent 15 minutes trying to find something even remotely close to that from Limbaugh. You don't get it, do you? He isn't paid for any of that, he's paid to sell his sponsors' product. That is the beginning, middle, and end of it. He panders to those who can't think, won't think, or are afraid to think and he does a great job of it. He sells a lot of soap. Just like Ellen Degeneres or Oprah.

Oh I think there are folks out there who try to get people to think about issues: Krauthammer, Joe Scarborough come to mind, even O'Reilly on occasion. There aren't too many liberals left on TV that can be said of though. But certainly anyone in the media is about demographics. Even if the person themselves doesn't care, their sponsors do.

Just my own belief. I stand by it. I've never dealt with an honest insurance company, and never expect to. In fact, I don't believe insurance companies, especially health insurance, can be honest and still earn a profit. They have to convince you that you are safer if you give them your money because everyone else is also giving them money and they will give it back to you if you need it. For example, I found a leak in my home a couple of years ago which had caused some significant wood rot. The repairs cost me upwards of $5000. But my home owners insurance wouldn't cover it precisely because wood rot was involved. Thats not covered by the policy as it turns out. Well, sure, the most common problem a structure made out of wood is likely to have is obviously not covered.

The term came into use because callers would frequently begin by giving praise and thanks to Limbaugh. Knowing that the caller’s and listener’s time is valuable, one caller simply said roughly "ditto to what those guys said (how much they enjoyed the show)." Thereafter, callers were encouraged to simply say, “Dittos,” and then get right to their point. Thus, long-time listeners would begin their calls with “Dittos, Rush,” leading to the term “dittoheads.” [^]

Actually, Jon, I think I understand the basic concept guite well. But Limbaugh hold's an audience by passionantly articulating a very uplifting message

The man can stand up and give a two hour discourse on his beliefs to a live audience straight from his heart, no notes, no teleprompter, nothing. Lets see Obama or anyone else do that. Thats not fake.
Yeah, nobody else in the history of radio has ever been able to prepare material for a two-three hour live show and pull it off without reading from a teleprompter or reading verbatim from notes. It's not like he discusses current events, reads from newspaper articles, or takes calls, after all (oh wait). Beyond that, if you think that Rush's shows just kind of magically throw themselves together without any work because it's *gasp* from his heart then you just might be a little naive.

Off the cuff...[^] The man clearly believes in what he says. Make all the jokes you like about drugs or divorces, you simply cannot take that away from him.
Chaining ourselves to the moral high ground does not make us good guys. Aside from making us easy targets, it merely makes us idiotic prisoners of our own self loathing.

you're confusing Rush with Gibbs.
Mike - typical white guy. The USA does have universal healthcare, but you have to pay for it. D'oh. Thomas Mann - "Tolerance becomes a crime when applied to evil." The NYT - my leftist brochure. Calling an illegal alien an “undocumented immigrant” is like calling a drug dealer an “unlicensed pharmacist”. God doesn't believe in atheists, therefore they don't exist.

Really? You don;t happen to have a citation, do you? I just spent 15 minutes trying to find something even remotely close to that from Limbaugh.
He made a comment to that affect yesterday - the hispanic community is not monolithic. You'll just have to trust me or join his 24/7 subscrioption. He's been citing Patton a lot this week "If everybody's thinking alike, somebody isn't thinking..."

On the other hand, there are a bunch of Republicans who seem to assume what you find uniquely Rushian and I find rather patronizing of you.
I don't understand that point.

If there's a true conservative speaking for other conservative out there, it's Charles Krauthammer. Rush yammers on saying whatever get him ratings.
Rush is a big fan of Krauthammer ,as am I.

Stan what scares me is the number of people who have stupid-ass ideas like ... criminalizing the selling of any and or all insurance of any kind.
Just my own belief. I stand by it. I've never dealt with an honest insurance company, and never expect to. Then both of you should take his advice: "They should do nothing about rumors in liberal magazines about her intellectual capacity, nothing about her temperament, nothing ad hominem. . . .That's what Republicans ought to do and not attack her in a personal way, in any way."

Oh please. That's a skill and a talent, it hardly is a mark of sainthood. Laurence Olivier used to pull off passionate three hour performances 8 times a week, without believing a word of what he was saying. That's what performers do. You sound like Oily talking about Obama.

Mike, when you talk about insurance, I listen carefully, because you know more than I do. I spent the first 15 years of my adult life working in the performing arts - radio, TV, and live theatre. I know a shill when I see one.
