Well, to be honest, it's really just an annoyance. I worry more for people for whom a pay cut is the difference between keeping and losing the house ( we own ours ). But while most of those people are not likely to be paid in foreign currency, one has to assume that the shifting rates are affecting them too, in different ways.

I suspect your pay cut will total over 50% by the end of the year.

So, the Australian dollar bought 60 US cents at the start of the year. I am paid in USD. It went to 70 cents when Obama started printing monopoly money for the bailouts. As of this morning ( post GM, I guess ), it's at 82 cents. My wage has dropped by 25% since the start of the year.

Thank God I get paid in Australian dollars.

It's possible. I can afford that, if I need to. Like I said, I worry more for people who don't have the wiggle room that we do.

ROTFL. The USD is still worth more than the AUD. If you were indexed to the AUD, you'd have got a shock, a year ago it was worse than it is now, close to equity. So, it's been a roller coaster. I just hoped it would sit at 60 for a while, and didn't expect it to go above 75.

I give money to people who can't help their situation, such as people in the third world. I don't give it to people who live in the same system I do and fail to make something of themselves.

Yes, these are uncertain times, and most of that is due to the fiscal mismanagement of the US. But, like I said, thankfully it doesn't actually hurt me, it's more of a PITA.

Open a US bank account, stick it in there and transfer big chunks when the rate is good. Also means you could spend that money when you travel over there and not pay two conversion rates. An anonymous Swiss account would also be kind of cool

Yeah, I was actually considering that, especially as I don't actually need money on a month to month basis. I should do that in July, I perhaps should have done that last week. The only issue I see is, how do I account for that to the tax office ?

Which is why I am not in favour of massive welfare in my country. that's also why you can't have my money, by definition of where you live, begging makes you exactly what you're describing ( I know you were not serious, but, I am using the example ). My point is, you don't seem to realise how there are places where people plain cannot eat, and not because of laziness. Or even how your own prosperity is based on their poverty.

My point is, you don't seem to realise how there are places where people plain cannot eat,

If I couldn't eat I would grow a garden, in fact I have one full of potatoes just in case. If there was a drought how are they going to spend that money on food then huh?

ROTFL. The USD is still worth more than the AUD. If you were indexed to the AUD, you'd have got a shock, a year ago it was worse than it is now, close to equity. So, it's been a roller coaster. I just hoped it would sit at 60 for a while, and didn't expect it to go above 75.

It looks like this, right? [^] My boss said I should save it up so I could move to Australia when I retire...

Chaining ourselves to the moral high ground does not make us good guys. Aside from making us easy targets, it merely makes us idiotic prisoners of our own self loathing.

Yeah, I was actually considering that, especially as I don't actually need money on a month to month basis. I should do that in July, I perhaps should have done that last week. The only issue I see is, how do I account for that to the tax office ?

Talk to a good accountant or maybe a financial planner, I'm sure there are many "opportunities" to reduce your tax :)

That's the smartest thing I've heard you say. I have 11 acres, and we grow enough fruit and veg, as well as raising lamb and chickens, that we could feed ourselves if we needed to. More people should grow at least some food.

Wow. My money is not given to poor people, it is used to fund aid such as food, seeds, sources of water, to help people to be able to feed themselves.

Not really. I mean, it wasn't something I was ever asked to vote on. I tend to buy locally made, even though it costs more, as I've said before. Voting with your wallet is the only choice we get in all of this.
