Guys, I love good SciFi. Thanks to whoever suggested John Scalzi to another poster in here. I read that posting a few months ago, and forgot all about it before Amazon suggested Old Man's War to me. I enjoyed the book very much, and the other two of the series (as far as I know) have been added to my shopping cart. I just wanted to say: Thank you.

If you like kick-ass sci-fi, try Tanya Huff's Valor series: http://www.amazon.com/Valor-Series-by-Tanya-Huff/lm/RNZCTJ2N8YTOB/

      Best wishes, Hans

Thanks for the hook up. Always looking for new sci-fi. Just added the trilogy to my SciFi book club cart. 3 hard covers for 33.99, not bad. I've been reading a bunch of Jack McDevitt stuff, and liked everything I've read so far, especially Deep Six and Chindi.

I just finished all 4 books in the Old Man's War series and they are pretty damn good. The 4th, Zoe's Tale is a retelling of book 3, but from Zoe's perspective and is different enough to be a very instresting read. Old Man's War The Ghost Brigades The Last Colony Zoe's Tale Currently I am on book 2 of the Jack Campbell Lost Fleet series and so far they have also been excellent. They are space military themed if you are into that kind of thing. The "time lag" of the space battles has been interesting. It breaks away from most space battles you may be used to from things like Star Trek and BSG where you can see the enemy over great distances in real time. In these books everything is delayed depending on how far it is from you, so a space battle that you think is happening in real time has already happend minutes or hours before and you are just now seeing it. It is alway interesting when the authors factor in some real physics and don't go in for the I can see everything style.

Aye, I'm a big fan of "hard SF". A good book for "real time" space battles is Larry Niven's "Protector" where a fight in space lasts several months (or was it years) and there's no faster than light drives, photon torpedoes or the like. It's all down to manouvering, timing and trying to outthink your opponent.

Larry Niven - one of the great SF writers, I miss his books.

I wasn't so thrilled about Zoe's Tale to be honest. I would recommend people skip it unless you're a completist. There's nothing new in it it's literally just the same events from another perspective. I'm mystified why he wrote it to be honest. The rest are excellent though. Military themed sci fi seems to be a real hit and miss prospect, there is a boatload of very bad military sci fi out there and just a few gems. It seems to be the dumping ground for hack authors for some time. I'll check out the Jack Campbell stuff though, I do like well written military sci fi when I can find it.
