And a possible Software Tax - say £20, this will increase £10 a year after budget day.

My next computer may be a Mac and I'd considered dual-booting Weven (just for the hell of it), but at $300 - I don't think so. Does anyone really think the bloody OS on a PC is worth $300?

Initial upgrade prices for home/pro are $50/100 until the stock of promo copies are sold out (supply TBD). I think MS really blew it though in not dropping the price of premium in response to the removal of the home basic version. They need a cheapo edition for the $400 15" decelleron laptops. http://news.cnet.com/8301-13860_3-10272259-56.html[^]

Good thing it will be free in our yearly academic licensing agreement otherwise XP would live well into the 2010s in our department.

IMHO Microsoft should offer one Windows SKU (Ultimate) priced like this: Retail upgrade from Vista = $25 for 1 PC or $75 for family pack (5 PCs) Retail full version = $100 for 1 PC or $300 for family pack (5 PCs) OEM prices = 50-60% of retail This would have spurred a ton of hardware sales (both OEM and bare-bones) and dealt a serious blow to Apple and Linux. IMO it would probably make more money for Microsoft in the long term.

Lets be honest right, retail pricing means nothing. When was the last time anyone you knew went out an brought a retail copy of windows. Most non-tech users just get it pre-installed with their next PC purchase. Most businesses use separate purchase channels, or have some form of volume licensing arrangement. If I buy it, I certainly won't be paying those prices. I'll be getting an OEM edition. (Or in all likelihood I'll be using my MSDN copy at work and stick with kubuntu at home, but I'd probably make the same decision at any price)

While I agree it's not truly as important as OEM pricing it still matters. There are more home PC builders than you might guess plus the retail price is what people see when shopping and gives a bad impression.

Ethically with a new OEM PC? Or unethically to use on an existing PC?

My next computer may be a Mac and I'd considered dual-booting Weven (just for the hell of it), but at $300 - I don't think so. Does anyone really think the bloody OS on a PC is worth $300?

Really? Where can I get a free MSDN subscription? ;P

In this economy, how many people/businesses are buying new PC's? I thought one of the great things about Weven was that they trimmed it down to run better on lesser hardware?

I'll bet there are more retail sales than MSDN subscriptions...
