Now why would anyone want to do that?

You can already boot into DOS/Win 95 and get full access to the entire filesystem bypassing NTFS permissions etc using something like the sysinternals ntfsdos utility (I've used it in the past for data recovery). The existance of something like this doesn't really surprise me and it'll only work for local accounts anyway.

Interesting, but aside from making it more idiot friendly it doesn't make the risk level any higher for windows (dunno about *nix but I assume the same could be done). There've been bootable CDs that will overwrite a password for years. I don't know if any offered it, but presumably having one that outputs the old password hash and lets you restore it afterwards to cover your tracks wouldn't be that hard for anyone here to implement.

Dang, I could have used that a few weeks ago when replacing my system with a used one. I wanted to run some tests on the "new" system to see if it was worthwhile going to. In the end, I just did a "quick" reformat and reinstall of XP, decided it was worthwhile.

Enough said, really.

I'm always surprised at how many people suggest I'm in the tin foil hat brigade when I mention that my laptop uses an encrypted drive massive long gobbledegook passwords etc. Glad i'm not the only one
