Now do I need to get Open Office, or are there other free and independent word processing and spreadsheet applications? I only need a really good wp, for professional writing and without looking, have some doubts about Google Docs.

If you are looking for a web-based one other than Google Docs (formerly Writely), did you check out the following: 1) ThinkFree 2) Zoho Writer? [supports Google Accounts based authentication too]

Open office can read and write MS Office documents. I've been using it for yonks and it's fine.

Not free and Corel is one of the more annoying companies on the planet, but there's always WordPerfect.

I started out my word processing career with WordPerfect, back in about '92. I was an apprentice, and did my written assignments using WordPerfect and Harvard Graphics. I used to leave carefully measured spaces between paragraphs, then reinsert the page and print the illustrations. On a dot matrix :~ printer.

I was recently in the same boat and moved to OpenOffice as it read the Microsoft files. I would not mind paying $20-$30 for an office app, but just do not see the value of MS Office for my minor needs. Same reasoning why I have a some Unbuntu machines here, for the use of the those machines it does not justfiy a MS OS license fee for each.

I'd happily replace Office 2007 with a slate and chalk. And cloud computing is only good if you own a chunk of the cloud. OO appears to be good enough for everyone except me (I use a Hell of a lot of the deeper, darker WP functions), so it should be OK. Here's a tip, though: Stay well away from anything to do with XML and documentation. If an app uses XML in the background, fine, but don't get involved. You'll regret it as much as everyone else who has ever tried.

If you can find 2 people to split with, you can get office home and student for $30 each. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116135[^]

OO is good, and will open and save Doc files, but if you're after a "really good wp" it may not be up to it. It covers the 85% of Word that most people use, but you may find you needed that extra 15% - I do at times.

I guess that would defeat the license ;)
