I am interested in his views on homosexuality and sex education, seeing as they are so retarded. He refuses to defend them. I wonder what your views are ( I honestly thought that people who opposed all sex education were a myth ).

They are a myth. I think the disagreement lies in who should do the educating.

I would agree that it's a sad thing that the schools need to be relied on because some parents don't educate their kids, but I also feel that I have a responsibility to be involved in my kids learning to read, do math, etc. My daughter is in high school and I still talk to her about her lessons and expand on them. The point is, the school provides a framework of support, and they are far more likely than I am to have the time to talk in depth about things like the development of a baby, etc. My feeling is, anyone who doesn't know where a penis goes by the time they hit puberty, needs to be told. I've never opposed any form of sex ed, and I am sufficiently involved that I'd find out if what they are taught, went beyond what seems acceptable to me. CSS seems to think that sex ed in schools means sitting kids down and showing them porn. I don't get that, does this mean that's how his dad told him about sex ?

I don't recall Joshua ever saying, but I suspect that his father wasn't around.

Yes, I agree. The question is, if the parents are not around, not involved, what is wrong with the schools teaching them, preferably before the Black Eyed Peas do ?

Nothing, but in situations where parents haven't abdicated their responsibility, I can see how they might think that the education system is stepping on their turf. I can also see how people that hold certain convictions, might get upset to see their child taught contrary to those convictions.

I would expect any sex education class to involve a letter to parents, to allow parents to bow out if they want to. I would also expect to be given access to the materials, if I wanted to talk to a teacher before the lessons went ahead.

Well, I expect the school to focus on teaching how the plumbing works, not on value judgements, although I would like the school to emphasise the down side of teen sex, for sure. I assume that's what you mean, and not that some parents are scared for kids to know how their bodies work ?

I don't think that happens, at least not in the US. Of course, I have a very limited data set.

I think they can figure it out without any help. It's kind of like a legalists objection to the teaching of grace, "it will just give them a license to sin." My response to that is, "I sin just fine with out a license!"

The issue is that kids are working out where it goes, without understand what happens next. The media encourages them to experiment with sex, and hell, it feels good. That's why it's important for them to understand exactly what leads to pregnancy. I house sat for someone once, and her daughter had a ton of dolly magazines. We read them for a laugh. Girls were writing to ask if oral sex can make you pregnant, if it's true that you can't get pregnant if you enjoy it, etc. That sort of ignorance leaves girls in particular open to all sorts of lines that end up with pregnancy.

Yes...I guess I needed the irony icon. Parents who think they are preventing teen sex by keeping them ignorant, may find out that ignorance isn't a barrier.

Here, kids in the low teens do a class where they get a baby doll that cries at night and needs to be changed. That's the sort of thing that sounds like a good idea to me, make them appreciate the reality of having a child, and then see if they make the right calls. And that is the sort of thing that goes on in sex education classes here, not showing kids porn or talking about how you can do whatever you want, if it feels good.

It was cool, wasn't it? I wouldn't want to have been involved ... or to have to clean up the mess ... but it was an awesome video.

Yes, that was the point I think Christian was making about being involved enough to find out what is being taught. Parents should have the right to have their child exempted from the class without repercussions if they don't like what is being taught or if they feel like it is the parents responsibity to do the teaching.

Well, if you're too stupid to know that, then surely that proves that you are too stupid to teach your kids about sex, which is why the schools should. Boys have a penis. Girls have a vagina. This is teaching. Boys should put their penis into every vagina they can. That is advocacy.

Exactly. If the school has to be transparent to parents, that only makes it more likely they will teach the facts without any sort of advocacy that parents may object to.
