Could you not donate it to one of those organisations that refurb PCs for the underprivileged, if there is one near you, that is?

unfortunately the MB has gone as the nvidia chip is soldered onto it so it's a write-off as far as repair goes ... that's why i'm offering up the parts for anybody who can use them

It's good to see you back, even if only for a short time. How are you doing?

You might want to do some searching around on this, but I think I remember that there were a number of Dell laptop models impacted by a design issue with the GPU, but I can't remember which models or GPU. I think someone from Dell even blogged about it. I think came down to the manufacturer of the GPU used a die that didn't cut the mustard which caused it to overheat and the GPU then wouldn't work at all. If it is an impacted model, you should be able to force their hand to repair it for you given it is a known manufacture defect.

They were nVidia chips; and the problem wasn't the die itself, it was the new leadfree solder (thank you ROHS) used to attach the BGA chip turned out to be more brittle than expected; and needed a more rigid support than the mobos typically provided.
