Has anybody else using crystal reports noticed that as they have been bought and sold numerous times through the years, the knowledgbase and general support resources available to developers has gone from bad to worse to nonexistent? Their solution is to upgrade to the newest version and all your problems will be solved. They advised a client to upgrade (from 11 to 11.5) and forgot to mention that it might break existing web reporting solutions installed on their server. I finally got it working, but what a PITA!

How did so many people decide that crystal was the answer to their report problems? I've never heard anything but horror stories for it and the reports it spits out look like tabular crap. We didn't like any of the canned/api reporting packages so we just wrote our own. Best way to go in my opinion.

Came with early versions of dotnet and was the default reporting platform in the 90s. Crystal had the opportunity to become completely dominant in their market and blew it with lousy support. Their product became so complex with backwards compatibility that it basically ground to a halt. I used to make a living building reporting systems based on CR, I now use Reporting Services.

This is one of my favourite rant subject, I hate this product with a passion only matched by CGs regard for Vista. In 2003 I got a follow up call from a CR support manager, first I had ever had, he was following up a support request I had put in the system 14 MONTHS previously. During that time I had moved the department I work for to Reporting Services and took great pleasure in letting theis poor sod know exactly what I thought of his product and their service.
