Avast for antivirus. For firewalls I don't like bloat so generally stick with a combination of the windows firewall, IPSEC policies and my router.
How is Avast wrt to False Positive? Based on the feedback from my colleagues, it seems Avast is more popular. Their only concern was that User Interface was not so simple. I have no idea of judging that but I can live with that

If it were me - Avast[^] for anti-virus, I'd probably just use the built-in Windows Firewall, but if I were to go a step further, I'd probably use the ZoneAlarm Free version[^] - that's what I used to use before I had a hardware solution.

Zone Alarm is ok, but a bit officious and interfery. I stopped using it a few years ago when it kept prompting for "Purchase the Professional Version".

Hello CPians, I would be giving my old laptop(Windows XP,32 bit) to my wife. Since, she would only be browsing(facebook,orkut.. :-O ), chatting and listening to songs, I have removed most of my stuff from the laptop. Now I need to install a decent Anitvirus and Personal firewall. Freeware would be a better option but its not a deal breaker. Any sugesstion(especially Frewall)?

If all that's happening is as you say then the OS F/W is probably good enough. But if your wife likes to shop, eBay, Amazon, Paypal, pay bills etc then I'd set her up with the Trend Micro Suite - its robust, not as in-your-face or intrusive as the others and more intelligent/intuitive. My experience with their the support has been an eyeopener on 2 occasions. Once I had a tricky problem running multiple mail clients (Outlook & Pegasus), the phone support person was out her depth, but she got a very good person to call me back within 30 mins, he stuck with me for another 30-50 minutes until the problem was fixed - cost $0.00, all part of the service sir. BTW there was nothing wrong with TM s/w - I was making invalid assumptions, it was smarter that I thought smarter than me maybe. I use Eset NOD for malware protection and the On-Line Armour firewall, there's a lot of history there and I long term licences.

I stopped using it several years(7?) ago as well, when I got hardware between me and t'Internet.

She likes to do lot of window shopping in amazon and ebay but never actually buys from it(I hope so). She bookmarks it and I buy it. Anyway still I should assume the worst case scenario, because I may end up using this laptop again

So "zone alarm" is out of the recommendation list. It should not end up, with my wife in phone with me 24/7 asking what to do. It beats the purpose of giving her a dedicated computer :rolleyes:

OA maybe overkill, I have it on four systems, great product but .... . Comodo is also probably overkill, and its not the most stable product - the relationship between the users and company is a bit iffy too, my experience is that you have to be a Comodo fanboy to get any support. Zone Alarm testing of OS changes has been slack in recent times, there were ZA nightmares when SP3 was released. Inevitably everyone blamed MS but it was entirely ZA's problem, they just did not do the testing. MS received almost no progress reports like they did from Symantec, OA, McCafe, Trend Micro etc - those reports are in the public domain somewhere. Two weeks ago I took ZA off a friends 3-4 year old laptop when its license expired - performance shot up remarkably, I've put Avast Free on for Malware protection, A lot of rebadging goes on in the security space. OA rebadge someone elses malware shields, it was going to be NOD but they went with ... maybe Kaspersky. I think the NOD guys rebadge someone elses f/w - not OA, maybe Jetico. And the rebadgers are apt to change their loyalties, which gives the likes of McCafe, Symantec, Trend Micro an edge, at least their stuff is their stuff and not someone elses stuff Outpost has a good reputation, but I've not used it.

Get a hardware firewall (not one of the consumer routers, but a decent firewall device. Then ALL of the machines on your LAN are protected. I would recommend a Zywall for this. As for A/V, check out Microsoft's recently released product. It's unobtrusive, and absolutely FREE. You have to be running a legal copy of Windows (XP-32 or any 32 or 64-bit version of Vista/Weven) to use it.

I installed Weven/64 and MSE on my laptop. My wife uses it when she travels so I figured it should have a little more protection. It was a painless install and hasn't interfered with the use of the system.

Hi, I personally use ESET NOD32, but if you are wanting something for free, then I'll not hesitate to recommend MSE to you. You may want to read this post of mine[^]

First you need from a good antispyware/adware application. The AV and the Firewall are on the second place. I believe you wife is reasonable enough to not start and download EXE files. So, good antispyware and Windows Firewall or/and your rooter should be enough protection. The AV programs, even the decent ones, gives you a fake sense of security.
The narrow specialist in the broad sense of the word is a complete idiot in the narrow sense of the word. Advertise here – minimum three posts per day are guaranteed.
